A second season of HBO’s limited series Big Little Lies was met with some skepticism, but the news that Andrea Arnold of American HoneyWuthering Heights, and Transparent will take the helm inspires confidence. While season 1 had a sense of finality that we felt didn’t need more episodes, I can’t deny that I’m curious to see how Arnold will build on the stories of Jane (Shailene Woodley), Renata (Laura Dern), and Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz).

Season 1 was met with a great deal of positive attention, but this news is especially exciting considering every episode of the first installment was written by David E. Kelley and directed by Jean-Marc Vallée. To see a woman take on Big Little Lies will no doubt be interesting.

“I’m thrilled to be bringing back this talented team of artists,” said Witherspoon on season 2. “It gives us the opportunity to delve deeper into the lives of these intriguing and intricate Monterey families and bring more of their stories back to the audience who embraced and championed them. I’m beyond excited to be working with talented and acclaimed director Andrea Arnold who will be at the helm. Andrea’s unique storytelling style will be a welcome addition to the filmmaking team.”

Are you excited about Arnold’s involvement in Big Little Lies season 2?
