Arizona woman compliments bathroom stranger’s outfit, gets a snobbish anti-Target and Lululemon slander in return: ‘Looks at me in disgust’

She was definitely caught off-guard.

An Arizona woman’s attempt to compliment a stranger’s clothing in a public restroom allegedly led to an unexpected debate over personal pronouns and corporate ethics.

TikTok creator Hailey Marshall (@ilovehaileymarshall) shared the experience in a video that has reached nearly 900,000 views. She recounted how a casual interaction in a public women’s restroom unexpectedly turned into an awkward conversation about brand boycotts and gender identity with a stranger.

Marshall claimed that the exchange left her confused. Even as she attempted to exit the facility, the stranger allegedly continuously questioned her retail choices.

An outfit compliment in the public bathroom led to an unexpected disagreement

According to Marshall, the encounter began when she noticed a woman wearing a top she liked and decided to say something. “I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, like I love your shirt.’ And she goes, ‘Oh my gosh, thank you!’” All was going well up until Marshall asked her where did the stranger got the shirt.

The stranger reportedly replied that the shirt is from Target, but quickly clarified that they do not support the retailer and chose to purchase the item secondhand. They then allegedly shifted the conversation entirely and asked Marshall for her pronouns out of the blue.

Caught off guard, Marshall responded that she does not use pronouns and noted that they were standing in a women’s facility. “She told me, ‘That doesn’t mean anything. I’m a they/them, and I’m in the girls’ bathroom,’” Marshall recalled.

Marshall also claimed that the stranger became visibly frustrated when she tried to assert that she clearly looks like a woman physically. “She got mad, and she’s like, ‘I don’t want to assume your pronouns!’ Like, angrily,” Marshall claimed.

The stranger allegedly threw criticism as Marshall walked out of the bathroom

As Marshall prepared to leave, the discussion reportedly turned toward the backpack she was carrying. The stranger noticed Marshall’s Lululemon backpack and reportedly asked to confirm the brand. When Marshall affirmed the label, the stranger reacted critically.

“I was like, ‘Yeah, isn’t it cute?’ Looks at me in disgust, okay? Literally, she goes, ‘Are you joking? That is so not cute.’” According to Marshall, the stranger began arguing that consumers should avoid Lululemon and Target entirely due to controversies surrounding their corporate practices.

“You should never shop there… If you really care about people in this world, you will not go to Target and you will not go to Lulu,” they allegedly told Marshall. At the end, Marshall noted that the confrontation surprised her. She explained that it was partly because the stranger did not match the stereotypes she expected.

“I guarantee you’re expecting her to look a certain way. She did not! She was this gorgeous blonde chick, she was beautiful, okay? And she literally was like She looks like she is in a sorority,” Marshall claimed.

While ethical shopping debates and pronoun etiquette continue to generate discussion on social platforms, Marshall concluded her video stating that she simply intended to exchange a friendly compliment before going on with her day.
