Whoopi Goldberg’s Unexpected Words Leave Anne Hathaway in Tears During Emotional Moment on The View
Press tours are designed to keep the spotlight on a new release, but they do not always stay on script. Interviews often develop their own direction once the conversation moves beyond the latest project.
Anne Hathaway‘s appearance on Monday’s episode of The View followed that pattern. She joined Matt Damon and Christopher Nolan to promote The Odyssey, though the interview eventually turned away from the film itself.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the conversation eventually shifted from The Odyssey to Hathaway herself. The shift set up an unexpected exchange between the actress and host Whoopi Goldberg that became the defining moment of the interview.
She wasn’t expecting that moment to become so emotional
Goldberg turned to Hathaway during the interview and spoke about watching her career develop over the years. “Anne Hathaway, it’s been wonderful watching you,” Goldberg told the actress.
The comment came as the cast reflected on the success of The Odyssey, which has become one of the year’s biggest theatrical releases. Instead of asking another question about the production, Goldberg used the opportunity to acknowledge Hathaway’s work across her career.
Goldberg then added another message that appeared to catch Hathaway off guard. The remarks visibly affected Hathaway, who struggled to compose herself before responding. “I’d be crying [even] if I wasn’t pregnant right now!” As the audience applauded, Goldberg repeated that “it’s something you need to know and remember.”
Hathaway then thanked the longtime host, saying, “I don’t even know what to say, you know how I feel about you.” She later also praised Damon before the interview returned to discussing The Odyssey.
Although the appearance was arranged to promote Christopher Nolan’s latest blockbuster, the emotional exchange quickly became the defining moment of the interview. The moment also arrived during a year that has required Hathaway to balance multiple public roles at once. The actress has remained one of Hollywood’s busiest stars throughout 2026. Alongside The Odyssey, Hathaway returned to one of her most recognizable roles in The Devil Wears Prada 2. Monday’s appearance was not the first time Hathaway became emotional during this promotional tour. Earlier, while appearing on the Today show, host Craig Melvin surprised the actress with a gift for her upcoming baby. “We wanted to celebrate you and celebrate your bun there in the oven, so we got you a baby gift,” Melvin said.
He then revealed the present, telling Hathaway: “When the child comes out, we want the child ready for battle…. It is a Trojan outfit, custom-designed for the baby.” The unexpected gesture also left Hathaway emotional, making it the second recent interview in which a conversation about her professional work developed into a more personal moment.
Hathaway’s calendar remains packed beyond The Odyssey. Her release schedule is expected to continue through the remainder of 2026. She is set to appear in The End of Oak Street, an action film produced by J.J. Abrams, before returning later in the year in the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel Verity.
The upcoming films continue a career that has spanned more than two decades. Hathaway won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Les Misérables and has also earned Oscar nominations for Rachel Getting Married and The Apprentice. Alongside dramatic roles, she has headlined major commercial franchises including The Princess Diaries, The Devil Wears Prada, Alice in Wonderland, and Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, making her one of Hollywood’s most consistently successful leading actors.
