Animators Disappointed By Aang The Last Airbender Movie Leak

The Last Airbender 2026 leaked online, leaving artists and animators who worked on the movie devastated

The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender was a highly anticipated Paramount+ release that was slated for the latter half of 2026. But the movie was fully leaked online. Animators who worked on the movie have come forward to talk about how devastated they are over the incident.

Animator Julia Schoelart wrote on X, “We worked on the aang movie for years with the expectation that’d we’d get to celebrate all of our hard work in theaters.. just to see people unceremoniously leak the film and pass our shots around on twitter like candy.”

It’s unclear how the leak happened, but the movie was posted on X. Since then, multiple reports suggest that the movie gained more than ten million views.

Schoelart added, “I don’t like seeing people use paramount’s awful decision to remove the movie from theaters to justify leaking it. I totally understand folks not wanting to pay for/support paramount+, but pirating the movie after its release would have at least been better than this. This is incredibly disrespectful to all of the hard work the artists put in.”

The leak killed the hype over the movie

Piracy is never ideal for any work of media. However, between a leak and people pirating the movie, the latter is arguably less damaging. When people opt for alternate sources for a piece of media, it’s because it’s already been released and monetized.

Moreover, the Aang movie would have been sufficiently marketed by then. A trailer would have been released. Several teasers would have been pushed to build the hype to push fans to watch the Paramount+ release. Perhaps some fans would have even been incentivized to subscribe temporarily to Paramount+ so that they could watch a movie.

After all, Paramount already made the disappointing announcement in 2025 about The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender not having a theatrical release. Many animated movies have found success in theaters. A recent example of anime being successful in theaters is Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, grossing $162.4 million worldwide.

Essentially, Paramount’s decision is questionable. It may not be the best way to capitalize on a movie that has such a rich history. But after the leak, the financial outlook of the movie may even be bleaker than before.

Fans shouldn’t watch the leak

Tom Barkel, another animator on the film, shared the same disappointment as Schoelart did. But he also called for people to support artists instead of participating in the spreading of the leak. He posted on X, “This jeopordises future work for artists in an increasingly hostile industry. Don’t oversimplify please. That being said, the movie itself is a beautiful feat of art. So proud to be involved. If you engage with it and enjoy it then support it so there can be more art!”

At a time when AI is threatening creative spaces and industries, a leak as massive as this is understandably demoralizing. Artists worked tirelessly on the animated movie until its completion. The most shocking part of it all is that it wasn’t one part of the movie that was leaked. Rather, the full movie was released for the internet to watch.

Although Paramount has been trying to take the leak down, the damage has been done. The best thing fans can do is to wait for the film’s official release. It’s the best way to show respect to the artists that have given their all to make the movie possible.
