Man Pays Extra for Window Seat on a Packed Flight. Then a Couple Cites the Husband’s Broken Arm to Ask Him to Move: ‘Somebody Nice Would Understand’
Is all fair in love, war, and middle seats on airplanes?
Jourdan Davis paid extra for a window seat on a packed five-hour flight for one very understandable reason: He did not want the middle seat. Nobody wants that privacy-forsaken seat, which is likely why the couple already sitting in his row had the same idea.
Telling the tale on TikTok, Davis says he found a woman in the aisle seat and her husband occupying the window seat Davis had paid for. After he pointed out the seating problem, the woman asked whether he could take the middle instead because her husband had a broken arm.
There was certainly a cast to back up the story. Davis just wasn’t convinced that meant his window seat suddenly belonged to somebody else, especially when the proposed solution required him to spend five hours in the exact seat he’d paid extra to avoid. Based on the rest of the story, the rightful occupier of the seat was not just going to take this sitting down.
Apparently Being ‘Nice’ Came With a Middle Seat
According to Davis, the woman explained that sitting in the middle would be uncomfortable for her husband. That argument did little to persuade him.
“Yes, that is exactly why I didn’t book it,” Davis recalled thinking. He said he sympathized with the man’s injury but didn’t understand why it meant he should give up the seat he’d chosen. He’s hardly the first traveler to encounter this problem. Another passenger found a stranger in her paid window seat before being asked whether she really needed it.
The conversation took a sharper turn when the woman told Davis they had thought “somebody nice would understand.” Davis certainly understood the arrangement being proposed. As he saw it, she wanted the aisle, her husband wanted the window, and he was being asked to absorb all the inconvenience in between.
Davis refused, and the situation escalated. He says the husband began yelling about how uncomfortable sitting in the middle would be with his cast before hitting the flight attendant call button.
He even attempted some humor, pointing out that at least the middle seat came with two armrests. According to him, that didn’t exactly improve cabin relations. The middle seat has ruined supposedly good deals before. One Delta passenger even rejected a free Comfort+ upgrade when she discovered it would move her from the aisle to the middle for seven hours.
The Flight Attendant Offered Another Compromise
By then, the TikTok user says other passengers were watching while people trying to board were stuck behind the dispute. He eventually asked the flight attendant whether another seat was available, only to learn that the remaining option was another middle seat near the front.
The flight attendant then proposed a compromise: The wife could move to the middle, Davis could take her aisle seat, and her injured husband could keep the window. Davis says he agreed despite preferring neither alternative to the seat he’d actually purchased. The wife, however, reportedly declined because she needed the aisle seat to “stretch her legs.”
The flight attendant even asked whether another passenger would volunteer their window seat. According to Davis, nobody did, which rather perfectly demonstrated the popularity of the proposed sacrifice.
Eventually, thanks to the flight attendant, the husband moved into the middle and Davis took his assigned window seat. The only downside was that his injured seatmate spent the flight “moan[ing] and groan[ing],” turning what should have been a straightforward seating assignment into the “longest flight of my life.”
The story reflects only Davis’s account, as the couple has not shared their side of the dispute.
