Sunny joins Bo.
The Obama household recently experienced a significant loss as the family announced that their beloved dog, Sunny, has passed away. According to The Guardian, Sunny, a Portuguese Water Dog, was a fixture in the lives of the family for over a decade. Her death brings an end to a chapter filled with high energy, unique personality traits, and memorable White House moments.
Barack Obama shared the news in a social media post on the morning of September 16, 2026. He posted a heartfelt tribute to the 14-year-old animal. He described her as “a force of nature” while reflecting on the time they shared together. The family lost this cherished pet on Tuesday, September 15.
Sunny arrived at the White House in August 2013 during the second term of the presidency. She was born in June 2012 in Michigan. The family obtained her from a breeder and marked her arrival with a donation to the Washington Humane Society. They chose the name Sunny because it fit her cheerful personality. She joined Bo, the family’s first Portuguese Water Dog, who became a part of the household in 2009. Bo passed away in 2021 after a battle with cancer.
Life with Sunny was rarely quiet
She possessed an athletic build and boundless energy that often kept the family on their toes. According to PEOPLE, Barack Obama noted that she would frequently leap over the hedges on the South Lawn as if they were not even there. She spent much of her time outside chasing squirrels and birds.
Unlike Bo, who was often motivated by treats, Sunny preferred active engagement. She loved having the family run around with her or roll on the floor. She also enjoyed having her belly rubbed for as long as anyone was willing to participate. The dog’s high spirits occasionally led to some chaotic situations.
In 2013, she famously knocked over a toddler during a White House holiday event. Later, in 2017, she reportedly bit a visitor on the face. Despite these moments of rowdiness, she remained a central part of the family dynamic. She was fiercely protective of Bo. She seemed to sense that Bo was not always as alert or attentive as she was.
Sunny had several quirks that the Obamas grew to love
She was a loud and sloppy drinker. She also preferred the company of humans over other dogs. Interestingly, despite being a breed known for its affinity for water, she actually hated getting wet. She was also known to have accidents inside the White House. Former First Lady Michelle Obama once mentioned that Sunny would sometimes leave surprises near the Lincoln Bedroom or her office.
The former president confirmed this behavior, noting that he would often see her scurrying past his office before she could do her business. He explained, “I’m doing my work, and I’ll see this like scurrying – and I got to get up and run before she does her thing because if I’m too late, then there’s a little gift that she leaves.”
Sunny played an important role in helping the parents adjust as their daughters, Malia and Sasha, began to grow up. The dog provided constant companionship when the house became quieter. Barack Obama told the press in 2013 that they wanted someone to greet them at the door when they arrived home. Sunny filled that role perfectly. She followed the team around the office during their daily tasks. She also loved the daughters, even when they pestered her while she napped.
Sunny’s time in the spotlight included several high-profile appearances
She met famous figures like Pope Francis in September 2015. She also met television personality Ina Garten. Sunny made appearances at state dinners and even joined the family on a helicopter flight to Martha’s Vineyard.
Her legacy was cemented in the White House decor during the final Christmas celebration. Oversized replicas of both Bo and Sunny were created using 25,000 yarn pom-poms. These displays were placed in the East Wing Hallway to honor the presidential pets.
The bond between the family and their dogs was clearly deep. Barack Obama wrote, “We got Sunny at the start of our second term in the White House, and all of us – including our first dog, Bo – immediately fell in love.” He reflected on her character, stating that she remained “always loyal, always sweet, always ready for adventure, still fiery and gorgeous till the very end of her days.”
The family is now mourning this loss while holding onto the memories of her long life. Barack Obama wrote, “We will miss her terribly, and imagine she’s with her big brother now, making sure he’s okay.” For thirteen years, Sunny provided the family with energy, affection, and a unique presence that will be missed. She was a significant part of the White House history and a constant companion for the Obama family throughout their most public and private years.
