A CNN panelist says Fox News hosts spent years warning about communism, then every one of them got dressed up for dinner with Xi Jinping
No more bad blood?
For years, President Donald Trump has cautioned Americans about communism, repeatedly emphasizing it as a threat and warning voters against falling under a communist-style government if they do not support him. However, recent events suggest his claims may have been more of a political tactic to attract votes than anything else, and people are slowly starting to notice and call him out for it.
On Thursday, YouTuber, and political commentator Leigh McGowan appeared on CNN’s Newsnight with Abby Philip, where she pointed out Trump’s hypocrisy by criticizing his decision to host Chinese President Xi Jinping in the United States and at the White House. In videos that went viral on social media, she also blasted other guests invited to the State Dinner honoring Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, many of whom had previously criticized China and its communist government.
McGowan detailed the Republican rhetoric about communism. She said, “What concerns me is that I hear from the Republican Party, which is Donald Trump’s party, all the time, is the horrors of communism. That the Democrats are communists, and communists are ruining America, and communism is the biggest threat America has to face.”
Then she highlighted the stark contrast in how people in the Trump administration behaved during Jinping’s visit. She said, “I watched the red carpet be rolled up for the biggest communist dictator in the world who is currently funding the destruction of our own bases in an active war zone. And we’re supposed to say, well, here’s my painting and here’s my pictures and here’s my this and isn’t this hilarious from the other president? It was all buddy-buddy.”
McGowan also pointed out how Fox News had played a huge role in pushing this narrative against communism and China, but that some of their journalists were seen attending the dinner on Thursday. She said, “How can communism be the biggest problem we face when we just had the biggest party for the biggest communist? I watched Fox News all day talking about communism, communism. Every single one of them got dressed up to that dinner.”
McGowan’s rant about Trump did not end here
Criticizing Trump, McGowan also questioned China’s alleged role in supplying intelligence to Iran, which reportedly aided them in attacking American soldiers. These reports emerged around the same time Trump hosted Jinping and Liyuan. Regarding this, McGowan asked, “Why are we hosting the biggest communist dictator in the world while he’s actually attacking American soldiers through his own money?
This isn’t the first time this week that Trump’s views on communism have come into question. On Monday, he met New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion. Although Mamdani describes himself as a Democratic socialist, Trump has mostly called him a communist and targeted him for being one. However, during their meeting, Trump appeared joyful and giggly, leading many of his supporters to criticize his inconsistent stance.
