Pete Hegseth Dismisses Reports of Deteriorating Mental Health on USS Abraham Lincoln, Says the Issue Has Been ‘Misrepresented’

There have been growing reports of members aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, currently operating in the Middle East and enforcing a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, going through severe mental health distress. Several publications, including CNN, have reported on the matter. However, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth is in denial mode.
Hegseth now says that the matter had been “completely misrepresented”, adding that the department provides all the facilities and help required by crew members to work optimally without any issues. He said, “We make sure that every ship, every crew, every captain has everything we can provide them at any single moment” and added “”I have more respect and gratitude for those sailors than anybody.”
This is the latest of Hegseth’s efforts to dismiss another alleged “myth.” A few days earlier, he claimed the chatter about the US’s declining munitions stockpile was “manufactured.”
A CNN article published on August 13, 2026, reports that, according to three US officials, a sailor went overboard at the beginning of August from the USS Abraham Lincoln as crew members struggle with their mental health during the prolonged Middle East deployment. The individual was allegedly rescued after an hour and examined by medical professionals.
A report says crew members are struggling with “exhaustion and declining morale”
In a report released on Tuesday, Stars and Stripes said that they had interviewed active-duty sailors and family members, as well as “dozens of public social media comments and posts by crew members.” The same, as per the source, conveyed that sailors were “struggling with exhaustion and declining morale, including reports of suicidal thoughts and at least one instance where a crew member was prevented from jumping overboard.”
A Navy Times article mentions that Annabelle Loma, the wife of a crew member, told them that her husband had tried to jump off the USS Abraham Lincoln during his deployment in the Middle East. She said, “He’s scared. He thinks he’ll get a dishonorable discharge, and just because he was burnt out, his 13-year career is ruined, just like that. That’s not fair, that’s not right. That’s not what he should be worrying about right now.”
Reports indicate USS George Washington will replace USS Abraham Lincoln
A separate article published by Stars and Stripes reports that the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been at sea for more than 250 days, is set to be replaced soon by the USS George Washington in the Middle East. An article published by The Hill mentions that the carrier left a port in Vietnam last week and was seen crossing the Strait of Malacca on August 13, 2026.
When asked to comment on the matter, Stars and Stripes notes that the office of the Chief of Naval Operations was reluctant to discuss the matter due to “operational security concerns.”
