Trump Questions U.S.’s Trade Relations With Other Countries, Says ‘ Trading With’ Them Is Preventing America From Doing ‘Tremendous Good’

Since becoming president for a second term last year, Donald Trump has been pressing the need for the United States to become self-sufficient and has been taking drastic measures to achieve that goal. One of the primary ways Trump has been trying to ensure that his plan works is by imposing tariffs on several foreign countries, especially Canada, with whom America has been in a trade war for some time.
In a clip circulating on social media right now, Trump, during a White House event, says that America could do “tremendous good” for itself by “just not trading with other countries.” He continues, saying that America loses “$200 billion dollars” with the European Union. He adds, “If I didn’t trade with them, we lose nothing.”
Trump mentioned countries where the U.S. lost money. He said that with Mexico, America lost $195 billion dollars a year, while stressing that they didn’t have anything America “have to have.” He listed “Hot tamales, tomatoes, a couple of things” and said that America did not “need” them. However, despite mentioning this, Trump said he wasn’t cutting off relations with Mexico because he liked the Mexican president.
Trump mentioned Canada again, hinting at worsening of bond
The ongoing hostilities between the United States and Canada have been difficult to ignore for the past couple of months. On multiple occasions since last year, Trump has launched attacks on Canada, sometimes verbally and sometimes in action. In his latest attempts to sideline Canada, Trump announced 50 percent tariffs on select goods and services, inviting scrutiny from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and other officials in the Canadian government.
Just last week, Trump got into a fresh fight with Canada over Lake Ontario, which he renamed Lake America after signing an executive order. Canadians largely opposed the renaming of this historically significant water body, shared by the U.S. and Canada, much to Trump’s annoyance. He posted AI-generated videos on his Truth Social account for two days in response.
Now, he says America does not need to trade with Canada, a position he has expressed earlier as well. During the White House event, Trump mentioned Canada and said that if America did not trade with them, it would save between $60 and $90 billion a year.
Speaking on the possibility of that happening, Trump said that Canada would be in a “heap of trouble” and remarked that he didn’t think the country “would exist” because they “do 95 percent of their business” with the United States.
