The clip, posted by Austin-based creator Paulina Perez (@pauulinaperez) on June 6, 2026, has racked up over 26.2 million views and nearly 2 million likes, leaving passengers questioning just how safe their flights really are.
Perez’s video is only eight seconds long, but it’s packed with tension. She films herself looking concerned before panning to the wing, where a small metallic screw is clearly protruding near the “NO STEP” markings. The on-screen text reads, “guys be honest should i be worried,” and her caption is just as blunt: “they better drill that back in now.”
The comments section exploded with reactions ranging from dark humor to genuine panic. Some users tried to lighten the mood with jokes like, “Wait is that the phalange? ?” and “as an aircraft mechanic, the less you know the better.”
Others weren’t laughing
One commenter wrote, “This is something I would discretely tell a flight attendant about. Because I have a lot of flight anxiety and also don’t know how things get put together but assume that every screw is pretty important for an aircraft (unlike when I put together furniture).” A few skeptics even questioned how Perez noticed the screw in the first place, with one asking, “how tf did u notice.”
But the most reassuring responses came from actual aviation professionals. One self-identified aircraft mechanic commented, “I’m an aircraft mechanic (I’ve attached a photo of my credentials). It’s alright guys it’s one screw out of probably 30 that are supposed to be on that panel. 29 will hold just fine. Also there’s an adhesive seal on that panel.”
A flight attendant chimed in with practical advice: “if you notice something like this before takeoff you should ALWAYS inform the cabin crew!! it’s super important to report anything so we don’t have any problems ❤️ never be afraid to speak up !!!!”
So, how worried should you be if you spot a loose screw on your next flight?
The short answer: not as much as you might think. Aviation experts say that while any maintenance issue is worth reporting, a single loose fastener on a non-structural part of the wing – like an access panel or fairing – isn’t usually a cause for alarm. These parts are designed to handle vibration, temperature changes, and the constant stress of flight, and losing one screw out of dozens won’t compromise the plane’s safety.
That doesn’t mean airlines take these things lightly. According to Aviation Rush, every commercial aircraft undergoes rigorous inspections, from quick walk-around checks before takeoff to deep maintenance overhauls where the entire plane is essentially taken apart and reassembled.

But the screws you can see from your window seat? Those are usually holding on panels that smooth out airflow or cover access points. They’re important for efficiency and protecting internal systems, but losing one or two won’t send the plane into a tailspin.
Why do screws come loose in the first place?
