Ohio Mom’s 3-Year-Old Swims in Great Wolf Lodge Toddler Pool That Had Just Reopened. What Was Allegedly in That Water Made Him Sick for a Week
Great Wolf Lodge is one of North America’s largest indoor water park chains, attracting families with year-round pools, slides, and attractions for children of all ages. Guests expect water quality and safety checks to happen behind the scenes while their visit continues uninterrupted.
That expectation came into focus after Ohio mother @vanessakleeberger shared a TikTok about a trip to Great Wolf Lodge Sandusky. She says nothing seemed unusual at first, but one moment from the visit later stood out after her three-year-old became ill.
The video has since drawn mixed reactions on TikTok. While some viewers urged her to report the incident to public health officials, others questioned the timeline she described and whether the illness could be linked to the visit at all.
She says one moment kept bothering her
The creator says she arrived at the resort with her six-year-old and three-year-old and found the toddler play area closed. She says she saw a lifeguard checking the water before it reopened.
“I was a lifeguard for like seven years,” she says. “I know the reasons why they close sections of the pool, and I found it odd that they reopen so quickly.”
Despite her concerns, she says her youngest wanted to play in the toddler area. The family began swimming around 2 p.m., but by about 7 p.m. he was so sick they decided to leave instead of staying overnight.
She recalls stopping several times on the drive home because he needed the bathroom. Over the next few days, she says he developed a high fever, became lethargic, lost his appetite, and began vomiting.
The mother says she initially thought her son had a stomach bug. That changed after she saw a Facebook post from another woman who claimed her family had visited the same Great Wolf Lodge on the same dates and that her children had tested positive for E. coli. “I was like, oh, shoot. Like, that’s for sure what is going on with Cohen right now.”
She says she contacted her child’s doctor, who told her the symptoms sounded consistent with E. coli. She says the doctor advised monitoring him closely for dehydration and explained that certain antibiotics can create additional concerns if a patient has a particular strain of E. coli.
The creator says she contacted Great Wolf Lodge after her son’s illness because she wanted the incident documented. She says the employee first apologised before trying to locate her reservation.
She alleges she was then told that her reservation could not be found and that, without proof of the booking, no claim could be filed. “I don’t even want a refund,” she says. “I don’t want credits to go back there, because, like, why would I go back there?”
Instead, she says she is considering contacting the Erie County Health Department because she believes the issue should be investigated if multiple families became ill around the same time. “So if you are in the Ohio area and you’re thinking about going to the Great Wolf Lodge in Sandusky, zero out of 10, recommend.”
By the end of the video, she says about a week had passed since the trip. Although she says her son was improving, she felt the illness had taken a significant toll on him physically.
Many viewers encouraged the mother to report the incident to health officials rather than focus on compensation. “Definitely report to the health dept. also, your credit card charge is proof?????” one person wrote. Another added, “Call the health dept.”
Beyond this latest claim, Great Wolf Lodge has drawn attention on TikTok for other guest experiences, including one visitor who said its empty indoor water park felt like the eerie “Backrooms” and another who believes an illness during a childhood visit had lasting effects on her mental health.
