Atlanta Man’s Hotel Keycard Doesn’t Work. It Causes The Worker To Break Down In Tears And Hide In The Bathroom: ‘I Guess I’m Sleeping In The Lobby’

Most hotels nowadays use electronic room keys, the tap-and-open kind. Once in a while, a technical issue could mean your room key does not work, and you need the help of hotel staff.
For one Atlanta-based guest staying at a hotel in Paris, France, who booked through Expedia, an issue that started as a key that would not work allegedly escalated into a full-blown meltdown on the part of the hotel receptionist.
In a recent video, which got over 1.3 million views, the guest in question, Cody (@atlcody), shared the wild story of how everything went down.
What Went Wrong During The Paris Hotel Stay?
“Could not make this up if I tried,” Cody begins.
He says he was sitting in the hotel lobby waiting for the front desk worker to come out of the bathroom because the employee was allegedly crying.
The reason for this, he says, is his room key not working.
According to Cody, he had left his room key in his room, so he went to the front desk and asked for a new one. The worker gave him a key, but when He went upstairs and tapped it against the door, it flashed red.
He returned to the desk and told the worker it was not working. According to Cody, the worker tapped the card at the desk and insisted it worked.
“I go, ‘Well, it doesn’t work upstairs,’” he says.
That is when Cody says the employee suggested he was either drunk or on the wrong floor.
“No, I’m not drunk,” he says he told the worker. “I didn’t go to the wrong floor. It doesn’t work.”
Cody says the worker made him another key. But as he was walking away, he asked the employee for his name.
The worker allegedly found the question inappropriate.
“He goes, ‘Why do you want my name?’” Cody recounts.
According to him, the employee refused to tell him and then suddenly said he was quitting his job.
Cody says the worker then went on a several-minute rant about not being a slave and not being willing to be spoken to a certain way.
“I am just like, ‘Oh, my God,’” he exclaims.
He says he tried to explain that all he had asked for was the employee’s name because the room key still was not working.
“I just asked who I was talking to as the room key you gave me did not work,” he says.
‘I Guess I’m Sleeping In The Lobby Tonight’
According to Cody, another employee then came into the lobby, and the first worker started speaking about him in French.
He says he understood enough to realize the conversation was about him.
“Do not talk about me in French behind my back, in front of my face,” Cody recalls saying.
According to him, the employee responded by saying they were in France.
“If you do not like French, do not let me here,” Cody recalls him saying.
Eventually, the worker allegedly ran away from him, went into the bathroom, and began crying. Then, Cody says he came out and went into an employees-only area, closing and locking the door behind him.
“So if this room key doesn’t work, I guess I’m sleeping in the lobby tonight,” he says.
The key did not work. He says he had to go back downstairs again, find the worker in the employee area, and ask him to reprogram the key one more time.
He Shared An Update
In a follow-up video, Cody shared what happened next, even including clips that he says show the worker’s behavior.
According to him, the employee eventually followed him up to the room and saw that the key was not working, just as he had said.
He says the ordeal ended when the worker finally used his master key to open the room. However, Cody claims that before it was over, the worker cursed at him in both English and French and allegedly spat on him.
In the caption, the TikToker tagged Expedia and asked for help.
“Hey @expedia this happened to me at Hôtel Vacances Bleues Provinces Opéra yall wanna help out?” he wrote.
What Can A Hotel Guest Do In This Situation?
Because Cody says he booked through Expedia, he can contact the travel company with details such as the reservation number, all the videos he recorded, additional screenshots, and a written timeline.
Expedia may not have controlled what the hotel employee did, or rectified it directly. However, it can contact the property, document the complaint, and help push for a resolution through the booking.
Viewers Were Shocked
In the comments, viewers were stunned by the interaction.
“He def has something else going on in his personal life,” one commenter wrote.
Another viewer joked that the worker would not last in a different customer service environment.
“He would implode in US retail setting,” they wrote.
Someone else called it a very French experience.
“This is literally the most French experience you could possibly have,” they wrote.
Others thought the situation was unsafe.
“Yeah that’s a dangerous man right there,” one commenter wrote. “Uncontrollable anger and inability to act logically. I hope the hotel made this right”
