Man in Massachusetts says he tipped $10 less after bad service. The server took the machine before he could give a review: ‘tries to select the tip’

A man recounted on TikTok his service at a Massachusetts restaurant, saying that he had the “worst service ever by Andrea at La Hacienda.” In his video, he says that they get there on a Friday and that it’s packed, which they expected.

“Food’s good, vibes are good, music’s good, the place is packed, obviously,” he said in his video. He then goes on to say that he loves the restaurant and has been there multiple times, showing that he is familiar with the place.

He says that Andrea saw them and said, “We don’t have enough room. We’re too busy.” This was when they were walking around the bar looking for a place to sit. As they waited they got drinks, and when a table opened up his sister went to the server and said that they were going to take that table.

However, she was told that it was reserved–for the group that got there after them. “She told us that the tables are first come, first serve,” he recounted in the video, highlighting the issue of the table not going to them. It is unclear in the video if they asked anybody beforehand if they could have the next time.

Attitude can make or break a dining experience

They did eventually get seated at a table to eat. According to the video, though, the service was not great, with Andrea reportedly being distant and uninterested in them. He said that they only had three more rounds, including food, after being seated, and it still was not a great experience.

“At this point we decided we were leaving her a f***ing basic-ass tip,” he recounted in the video. According to him, he was leaving her $20.

As a server himself, he was also familiar with the system she was using. So when she took the machine back and tried to select the tip he stopped her, saying he knew what he was doing. He selected “custom tip” and entered in his preferred amount. He goes on to say that it was really only $10 less than a 20% tip would have been.

The server “snatched” the machine back before he could leave a review. “I was gonna leave thumbs down, comment ‘She sucked,'” he explained. “She was pissed.”

Many in the comments sided with him. There were also several people who said that we should normalize tipping $0 for bad service. But as a server, he still more than likely was sympathetic towards the plight of having to rely on these tips with the low wages they get paid.

The man ended the video praising the restaurant, but advising people to stay away from Andrea if they see her there.
