Woman Cleans Her Deceased Grandpa's Missouri Home. Then She Found a Strange Tape of Her Grandma 'She's Lying'

Decades of living in a home fill it with memories. But one woman’s experience in her late grandfather’s Missouri home made her believe that the walls don’t just absorb memories—they also talk. TikTok storyteller Jess (@scaredwithjess) shared a haunting tale online that sent many chills down people’s spines.

She says that her grandfather had recently passed away, and she had to clean out his house. He had been living alone in that house for years after the woman’s grandmother died.

The woman was in the attic, sorting boxes. Then, she found two old VHS tapes in a plastic bin.

One of the tapes had “She’s lying” written across it with a black marker. Instead of throwing them away, the woman borrowed a friend’s VCR and chose to play the tapes in her grandfather’s house. She played the tape without the strange scribble at first.

It started with static and then showed footage of the upstairs portion of the house. The camera was handheld.

“Please stop following me,” a woman, who sounded like her grandmother, said from behind the camera. The camera moved too fast. Now, a woman could be seen at the far end of the hallway with a hatchet in one hand. She was wearing a long night gown and long, dark hair.

“I told you not to listen to it,” the strange woman said before the tape cut to static. It was odd footage. At first, she thought that the tape was just an old home project. It could have been a staged, short movie.

Who’s lying?

She proceeded to play the second tape, the one with “She’s lying” written on it. The film opened up in the kitchen. She believed that it was the same night from the previous film.

The same woman who was recording the previous film came into view. She was checking the hallway, clearly terrified of something. Then, behind the dining room doorway, a quick, shadowy figured moved.

The clip jumped to the living room, and this time, she had a hatchet in hand. But she was crying, standing near the staircase as she looked towards the second floor.

“You’re making it sound like me,” the woman said. It was her grandmother.

“Come up here,” the other figure said, imitating the woman’s voice.

The tape jumped again, and they were now in the upstairs hallway. It was the same scene from the first clip. But the person recording the camera wasn’t holding it. The camcorder was set on the floor as the tape rolled.

The figure with a hatchet came out from the shadows. It was passing every door in the hallway.

“You’re recording the wrong one,” the voice said. Immediately, she realized that the voice resembled her grandmother’s.

The clip revealed that the figure at the end of the hallway had her grandmother’s face. It looked like a younger version of her grandmother but was unmistakably her. The moonlight showed her eyes to be completely black.

The creature started sprinting towards the camera. The person filming could be heard breathing hard before the camera shook. Her “grandmother” reappeared in the footage, slowly tiptoeing to the camera from the dark, still smiling.

Then, her “grandmother’s” body jerked sideways, unnaturally, until she faded into the darkness once again.

“I’ll wait for you out here,” her grandmother’s voice echoed through the darkness. The tape cut off, and the woman was in disbelief. After comparing the clips, she realized that in the first one she watched, her grandmother seemed to be the threat. But the second clip with the words “She’s lying” on them showed that there was something else in the house first—something that borrowed her grandmother’s voice and likeness.

A mimic in a quaint home

The woman went on to call her mother to ask if there was something that had happened in the house before she was born. Her mother went quiet, then explained that the grandmother used to say that “the house learned voices.”

Her mother went on to say that when she was fourteen, there was one night the grandmother locked every bedroom door inside the house. She believed that something had learned her daughter’s voice. Because of this, the grandmother sat in the upstairs hallway until the morning.

During the call, her mother said she never told her about this story because it “sounded crazy.” At this point, the woman was still in her grandfather’s home. But she lied to her mother when she asked if she was still in the house.

And then, she heard footsteps from upstairs.

“Come up here,” someone said. It sounded exactly like her. She dropped the phone and ran out of the house. Later, when she digitized the strange tapes, she realized there was another woman in the clip. It wasn’t her grandmother, just another figure in the shadows. Is this the real face of the mimic?

Only Jess will know. Although the creepy story spooked TikTok, it’s just a tale Jess conjured up herself.
