Edward Norton Seen Talking to Himself at the World Cup

Edward Norton and Brad Pitt were spotted side by side at the 2026 World Cup on Thursday and it has provided the internet with just enough to turn it into a hilarious callback meme to their 1999 movie, Fight Club. Including joking about Edward Norton talking to himself at the game.

The pair were at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Los Angeles, to watch the United States take on Türkiye in their latest group stage match. The game itself delivered plenty of drama — Türkiye edged out the hosts 3-2 thanks to a Kaan Ayhan winner deep into stoppage time — but for social media users and Fight Club fans, the image of Norton and Pitt together did not show to actor’s catching up in the hospitality box. Instead, it showed Norton’s unnamed Fight Club narrator talking to Pitt’s Tyler Durden or, spoiler warning, himself.

ESPN’s SportsCenter shared the image on their X.com account, adding the caption “Edward Norton talking to himself at the USA-Türkiye game.” As it always the way online, some people did not get the joke, but those who did were happy to run with it, quipping that the pair were “following the first rule” and not talking about…you know the rest. This was later reworked by another user, who added that the first rule of World Cup is that you do not talk about World Cup.

For anyone who has somehow managed to avoid the twist for the last 27 years, David Fincher’s cult classic, based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk, features Norton and Pitt as two men who seemingly strike up an interesting friendship revolving around the titular club. However, at the end of the story it is revealed that Pitt’s Durden is nothing but a figment of the imagination of Norton’s character. The World Cup photo of the pair fits perfectly into the twist of the movie and is the stuff of internet dreams for meme lovers.

Could We See Edward Norton and Brad Pitt in Fight Club 2?

Norton, now 56, and Pitt, 62, certainly looked like they were having a good time in their recent meeting, and of course that has led to speculation about whether they could be finally toying with the idea of bringing Fight Club 2 to reality. Although no sequel has been announced or even mentioned outside of fan circles, author Palahniuk did return to the world of Fight Club with belated comic book sequels in 2015 and 2019. The plots of both arcs find Norton’s character leading a relatively normal life roughly a decade after the events of the novel, until Tyler Durden finds a way back into his subconscious.

Palahniuk has appeared alongside Fincher to talk about the property over the years, and the idea of a movie sequel has always been lurking on the fringes like Durden himself. After almost three decades, the time for a new Fight Club movie seems like it has passed, but if there is one thing that Hollywood loves right now it is a nostalgic sequel. Top Gun: Maverick proved that a 36 year gap between movies isn’t enough to stop the right film becoming a $1 billion success story, and while other movies such as Gladiator II, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and many more have not been quite that much of a cinematic juggernaut, a screen reunion for Norton and Pitt would certainly please old Fight Club fans.

One thing that could keep Fight Club 2 off the slate is the amount of work both actors already have lined up, with Pitt lining up a healthy selection of movies. David Ayer’s Heart of the Beast will be released in September and will be followed the unexpected sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, entitled The Adventures of Cliff Booth with Pitt returning to his Oscar-winning role. He is also starring in A24’s The Riders, which is set to begin production early in 2027, and is expected to join George Clooney, Julia Roberts, and Matt Damon among others for Ocean’s 14. Norton has a lighter slate, with only the Olivia Wilde comedy-drama The Invite on a limited release from today, while the historical drama, Porto Rico, teams him up with Viggo Mortensen and Javier Bardem, but currently has no release date.

The Fight Club references that have been generated from Norton and Pitt’s World Cup appearance could be enough to remind someone that there are many fans of Fincher’s masterclass psychological thriller still out there. Nearly three decades after Fight Club divided critics but became a timeless classic, perhaps the world needs to see Tyler Durden return to screens. It would not be the first movie born from a social media post – just as The Wrecking Crew’s Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista.
