Tasting a slice of cake should be a delectable experience. With each bite, the texture melts the tongue, as the flavor invigorates your palate. Instead, a recent visit to the iconic Magnolia Bakery left a bad taste in this New York man’s mouth.

Serving Up Desserts of Disappointment

The clip begins with TikTok user Heath (@hkvondc) focusing on a dull slice of yellow cake with chocolate frosting, lying inside a plastic to-go container from the NYC Magnolia Bakery location.

“So, this is what happens when private equity purchases Magnolia Bakery,” he says. “I just got this cake. I’m sitting here with a friend, and I took one bite of it, and I was like, ‘This is awful. I bet private equity bought out Magnoila Bakery.’”

Upon a quick Google search, he confirmed his suspicion that the bakery was, in fact, bought out in 2021 by RSE Ventures. Needless to say, underwhelmed is the understatement of the century.

“I haven’t been there in a couple of years but this is absolutely disgusting, and shameful, and so sad,” Heath says. “Private equity destroys everything. This is a banana cake [that] is in this box with sad frosting. The whole store was just sad, and everything was bad.”

However, it isn’t only the cake that didn’t taste pleasant.

“I got the banana pudding also and that was just disgusting,” he remarks.

Then, he concludes the video by reiterating, “This is what happens when private equity buys anything that’s good, and fun, and sweet, and natural in this world and they destroy it.”

Magnolia Bakery Incident Elaborated

During an interview with The Mary Sue, Heath revealed that he decided to stop by the bakery while shopping in the Rockefeller Center. Since he’s lived in the city since 1998, he used to frequent the establishment weekly. This time, he sensed the moment he entered the building that it wasn’t the same as he remembered it.

“I just had a feeling as soon as I walked in to the bakery everything was different – no cakes or goods were on display everything was cut and boxed in plastic boxes. Everything felt very impersonal,” he shared via TikTok direct message. “The staff were not very nice. It felt like they were pushing cattle through walkways.”

Of course, the moment the content creator bit into his treats, alarm bells went off in his head.

“But the biggest giveaway was the taste of the banana pudding and banana cake. Both used to be heaven and tasted freshly made with quality ingredients,” he said. “What I tasted this time was like eating a Hostess cake from the gas station. I asked myself why it all would change so drastically and the most logical answer was private equity.”

As a result, Heath doesn’t foresee giving Magnolia Bakery his business ever again.

“I doubt I will ever visit another Magnolia after that experience,” he said. “From now on, if I want banana pudding and banana cake, I will go to Billy’s Bakery.”

Viewers Echoed The Same Sentiment

Heath’s video racked up over 607,000 views, with many alike expressing their disdain.

“Private equity has ruined the NYC food scene. It’s really a shame,” one viewer commented.

“But let’s not forget where the real blame lies….Magnolia Bakery SOLD their business to private equity knowing full well they were destroying their brand. Blame is a 2 way street here,” another remarked.

“Private equity has no business buying bakeries. RUINOUS,” a third stated.

“Why do they ruin everything?! Bad for business,” a fourth agreed.

Has Magnolia Bakery Declined?

Since 1996, this bakery has been a beloved New York staple, thanks to “Sex and the City.” When RSE Ventures acquired the business, the company revamped the famous banana pudding, though it’s unknown whether the other desserts have undergone a makeover. After three years of development, the recipe was ready for mass production and delivered via DoorDash and Amazon, per Fast Company.

As a result, Redditors on the r/AskNYC subreddit disapproved of the banana pudding’s redesign. Some claimed it “doesn’t hit the same anymore” or “it’s gross now,” blaming it on being “too big to taste good.”

Moreover, some critics described the flavor as “whipped cream with banana and nilla wafers” and “tasteless.” Despite the backlash, it hasn’t held the brand back. Recently, the bakery debuted its Salt Lake City store, which is one of its nine locations scheduled to open in 2026.
