Woman Slams Sleep Number for Moldy Mattress: ‘Stand Behind Your Brand, Do The Right Thing’

Everyone looks forward to getting some shut-eye after a long day at work, but not Shannon (@bigsisterera) on TikTok. Unlike most people, she said she’ll have to sleep on the couch for the night. But why would she do that if she has a thousand-dollar mattress in her bedroom?
Shannon said that it’s not because she has a husband she’s currently fighting with. Instead, she told TikTok about an issue she has with her Sleep Number mattress. At first, the mattress looked unassuming. Even Shannon said that there wasn’t a stain on the first layer of the mattress, which she purchased in 2012.
She also said that one of the selling features of Sleep Number on her part is the way that it can be disassembled. Unlike most mattresses, the Sleep Number has several layers that can be taken apart and cleaned.
But then, Shannon got to the foam piece layer of the mattress. It looked clean at first, until she flipped it over. The camera panned to a big, black mold stain at the bottom of the foam piece.
Why does her Sleep Number mattress have mold?
“I believe that’s mold,” Shannon commented. Upon research, Shannon said that Sleep Number received complaints about mold on its mattresses back in 2005. There are many ways that mold can grow on mattresses—especially if it isn’t being cleaned once in a while.
But Shannon believes that Sleep Number mattresses are susceptible to mold growth because it’s an air mattress. “Sleep Number is, essentially, just a glorified air mattress,” Shannon explained. “You get two separate air chambers that are connected to a hose… The problem is, the hoses can leak air.”
She continued, “When air leaks, air causes moisture. When that moisture has nowhere to go, it causes mold.” To add, molds grow in cool, damp places. It wouldn’t be surprising for a mattress layer that doesn’t get sunlight to grow mold. The mold wasn’t growing out of one spot—it was also on the air tubing of the mattress, as well as the protective layer of it.
Shannon gives Sleep Number an ultimatum on TikTok
Shannon expressed worry that she’s been sleeping on a moldy mattress, unaware, for a long time. Instead of immediately going online about the situation, Shannon decided to contact the customer service of Sleep Number. What their customer service told her prompted Shannon to go to TikTok for a solution instead.
“Number one, I got told I was a liar, and that’s not possible for my bed to have mold in it because it’s after 2005,” Shannon said. But her bed does have mold, and the company has to answer for it.
“Then the solution was, ‘For $575, we can send you a new piece of foam.’ Sleep Number, you didn’t patent foam. I can go to Home Depot and get a piece of foam. It doesn’t fix the problem that my bed has been leaking air, which is causing moisture, which is creating mold,” Shannon added.
Needless to say, for a mattress worth $1,499 at minimum, customer service better be supplying Shannon with a replacement part for free. They better be sending technicians to address her concerns. Instead, the company appeared to be unbothered by Shannon’s report.
“Sleep Number, you’ve got two solutions. We already know how social media works,” she threatened. “You can do either one of two things: you can reimburse me for the bed that I just bought, and I will take this video down.”
The new bed Shannon bought—including the bed frame, mattress, and other accessories—amounted to $6,119. Her previous items may have been contaminated by mold, which made it necessary for her to do a full clear. She continued, saying that if Sleep Number refuses to contact her, she will be suing them instead.
“Stand behind your product. Stand behind your brand. Do the right thing,” Shannon urged. There haven’t been any updates regarding her situation. However, her case serves as a warning for those who own similarly styled mattresses at home.
People may be sleeping on health hazards they had no idea about.
