‘He said you would be doing the experience’: Woman goes on first date with a man who loves surprises. Then the hostess hands her a pirate costume

A woman goes to a mystery location to meet her surprise-loving first date. She can’t believe he made her work a “full shift” and ghosts him after the bizarre experience.
In a video with over 454,000 views, TikToker Crystal Babin (@the_only_crystal_babin) says she agreed to meet a man at a restaurant and checked in with the hostess. The hostess informs her that her date signed her up for “the experience.”
“I was like, ‘What experience?'” Babin says. “Before I can say anything I’m following this girl. We’re going through the kitchen, going through another door, and going to this other [expletive] room that had costumes.”
The hostess instructs her to pick a costume, with options like a hot dog, a pirate, and a chef. Babin chooses the pirate outfit, and the hostess hands her a headset.
“She’s like, ‘You’re on table six,'” Babin recounts. “Am I working?”
Babin texts her date for an explanation for the strange date location. He tells her to wait for the surprise. In the meantime, she waits tables dressed as a pirate and even scores a $10 tip.
“This wasn’t an ordinary restaurant. This was a theatre,” she says. “One of those interactive dinner theatre places.”
Then, the lights dim and she sees her date.
What was her first date’s surprise?
“Who do I see walk out for the main performance? Yup, it’s him,” she says. “Full costume, [expletive] cape, and an accent.”
Her date makes a dramatic confession of his love for her in front of the whole restaurant while in character.
They meet up after the performance and he asks her if she liked the show. She replies, “I just worked a full-time [expletive] shift.” He tells her that she doesn’t have to pay for her meal because she was on staff. She informs him that she didn’t receive a meal.
“I left with the $10, emotional damage, and I never talked to him again,” Babin says at the end of the clip. “To the next chick, pick the [expletive] hot dog.”
Are surprises a good idea on a first date?
Men of the r/askwomenadvice subreddit discuss whether a surprise activity is appropriate for a first date, especially because trust hasn’t been established yet.
“When it comes to first dates I would much, much rather know what to expect – first dates can be nerve wracking enough without the element of surprise thrown in as well,” one suggests.
A second says, “A surprise date would be a deal breaker for me as I need a good exit strategy. I cannot plan for my own safety if I don’t know what kind of situation I will be in.”
Commenters on Babin’s viral TikTok tend to agree that surprises are better suited for later in the relationship. Others point out that Babin’s date’s surprise was hardly a date.
“I’m so introverted i would have left immediately,” a viewer writes.
“Id leave id be uncomfortable i would have major anxiety if this was my date id be shaking,” another comments.
However, some say they would have gone on a second date with the man out of curiousity.
A viewer questions, “Never talked to him again?! What?! This sounds ridiculous but girl he’s fun!”
“I would have HAD to go on a second date just for the curiosity. I honestly don’t think anything could top that though,” a second comments.
