Drake’s Iceman Cover Gets MAGA Treatment from The White House

Drake’s cover for Iceman got a MAGA palette swap straight from The White House. And, it’s more “Twitter fingers” from the federal government.

The rapper released a staggering 3 albums to close out this week. Iceman, Maid of Honor and Habibti. It’s an interesting strategy from the Canadian performer coming off a catastrophic feud with Kendrick Lamar.

However, The White House just can’t help themselves but troll at every possible juncture of life. So, when the glossy cover for Iceman dropped, they quickly rolled into ChatGPT or whatever and got to prompting.

For those who don’t know, the cover of Drake’s latest solo release features his hand in a rhinestone encrusted glove against a black background. If you zoom in, you figure out the little friendship bracelet-style jewelry on his wrists says “ICEMAN” in the beads. Also, his “6ix” symbol does look a lot like the white power symbols used by right wing figures.

The White House’s version of this image has the same glove, but holding a giant diamond encrusted chain that says “MAGA” in a varsity-feeling font. So, the standard-issue Donald Trump-era social media strategy. See a viral moment from Black culture and rush to insert yourself into the narrative.

Even when it’s someone as maligned as Drake has been since picking up that microphone against Kendrick Lamar, we have to notice the presence of a pattern here!

So, what’s a Canadian rapper to do when you get roped into the worst discourse loop possible? For Drake? Ignore it. He hasn’t really responded. In fact, he’s probably catching more guff off of Michael Jackson fans for the whole rhinestone glove thing than anyone else. Of course, Rap fans are piling onto his attempts to send subliminal shots at friends turned foes.

In times like these, I think it’s helpful and even necessary to post the “official” White House stance on trolling. During one of the 8 million times they got called out for posting memes of pop culture moments, they said the following. I find that instructive for how to deal with any and all trolling attempts on main.

“Attention: Trump didn’t come to play. Six months in. All gas. No brakes,” they wrote. “The winning will continue. The deportations will continue. The memes will continue. The golden age will continue!”

At the end of the day, this is all a reminder that the information economy is all that matters to the Trump Administration. Nothing else comes close. Gas prices continue to soar, and prices in the grocery stores have not cooled off with Summer on the way. But, there will always be time for trolling enemies and latching hold to pop culture moments for clout.
