Every bride worries someone might ignore the wedding dress code. Some might even anticipate a family member to show up in something slightly panic-inducing. However, seldom do some brides have a guest wearing a gown literally labeled “bridal dress” on the website.

One newlywed says that’s exactly what happened even after she carefully laid out an approved wedding color palette. She gave many options: deep purples, navy, forest green—anything decidedly not bridal. Her mother-in-law, however, apparently interpreted those instructions as more of a fun suggestion.

The bride’s response? Petty, digital, and honestly, kind of inspired.

Weddings and mothers-in-law sometimes just don’t mix together well, if Mary Sue stories are anything to go by. Countless stories span across the internet with different ways in-laws ruin nuptials. The dress code is usually a top contender.

In one story, The Mary Sue covered how her soon-to-be MIL was planning on wearing a gaudy gown, but thankfully, she asked for permission beforehand. Of course, the bride was upset even at the attempt.

In another story, a MIL tried to pass off her dress as “pink” when it was anything but. Luckily, the groom nipped it in the bud as soon as he saw it. He made her cancel it and get a navy blue gown for the wedding instead. However, with Sage’s (@sage_sag_saj_4) video, this mother-in-law in white made it to the actual ceremony.

What Did Her MIL Wear To The Wedding?

At 7.2 million views, Sage’s clip has started a discourse on countless For You Pages. It currently has almost 4,000 comments with staunch sides clearly divided.

The TikTok is simply a series of photos. The text overlay of the first photo reads: “POV: MIL wears a bridal dress to your wedding.”

It shows a family group picture zoomed into the bride, husband, and mother-in-law. Her outfit? An elegant off-white gown. The second screenshot is of a shopping website, with the dress being labeled as “A-line Bridal Dress.” The mother-in-law even bought the clutch purse and shawl to match from the website.

In one of the screenshots, there are text messages between the bride and the mother-in-law, before the wedding. Here, Sage clearly details the color palettes that are allowed for the wedding. She lists dark purple, plum, burgundy, navy, grey, silver or dark forest green.

She then says, “The only colors to avoid are white, ivory, brown, sage green, light pink, red, and ORANGE.” In the last and final screenshot, Sage posts her “fix.” It’s the same family group photo, except this time she edited her MIL’s dress to be bright orange.

What Did Sage Do?

After her post went viral, Sage posted a follow-up video.

This time, the text overlay says: “What to do when your MIL wears a bridal dress to your wedding.” What follows is a series of photos, all seemingly from what they call the “after-party.” With all these photos, Sage answers her own question: “throw the best party of your lives, bud bar included.”

A bud bar is described as “basically a bar serving marijuana instead of alcohol.” Sage’s photos include many photos of said bar, and at the very end, the couple watching fireworks in the sky. Reacting to the rather nonchalant response from the couple, one viewer says, “AND THAT IS THE HIGH ROAD, MY FRIEND.” Sage replies, “The highest road.” When asked if the MIL attended this after-party, Sage shares, “Of course not.”

How Did Other People React?

Thousands of viewers press Sage to reveal how her husband reacted to the situation. Her answer? “embarrassed as [expletive], held her accountable and they all cut us out.” She also reveals that other guests and even the vendors were definitely judging her MIL. As for how the MIL reacted to the edited bright orange dress in the group photo, there are sadly no answers. Sage reiterates that the MIL cut them off, so they have no contact with her now.

Viewers Share Their Own Wedding Stories

As unfortunate as it is, it’s also a very common situation. Hundreds of viewers drop their own photos in the comments section and showcase their MILs or, in some cases, even their own mothers ruining their wedding day with a bridal gown.

Attached to a picture of an MIL wearing a white dress, a viewer says, “Our MILs would be friends…her response ‘I wanted us to match!’”

Another viewer shares, “My step mom wore her wedding dress to my wedding !!”

A picture and comment with almost 4,000 likes shares, “Same but it was my own mother. She showed me three other dresses. Day of she unzipped a literal bridal gown and proceeded to tell me it was ‘her day too.’”

Lastly, for a bit of schadenfreude, one viewer says, “My MIL asked what colour the bridesmaids were wearing I told her pink and to not wear pink. She turned up wearing pink and was shocked when the bridesmaids were in gray lol.”

The Mary Sue reached out to the creator via TikTok comment,.
