Trump Endorses ICE Rebranding to ‘NICE’ Amidst Brutal Immigration Crackdowns

The White House X account endorses name change of ICE to NICE

President Donald Trump endorsed the idea of renaming the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) by adding ‘National’ upfront. The name change would alter the agency’s acronym from ‘ICE’ to ‘NICE.’ With ongoing immigration crackdowns still being enforced by the agency, the impact of the name change is insignificant at best.

The idea was proposed by a MAGA influencer, Alyssa Marie. She wrote on X, “I want Trump to change ICE to NICE (National Immigration and Customs Enforcement) so the media has to say NICE agents all day everyday.”

The suggestion seemed like a throwaway from a Trump supporter—essentially, nothing to be given serious thought to. But then, a month later, official government social media accounts have been backing the idea.

The White House official X account posted, “‘National Immigration and Customs Enforcement.’ DO IT!”

Trump himself wrote on Truth Social, “GREAT IDEA!!! DO IT.”

The ICE to NICE rebrand coldly received

Surely, renaming an agency responsible for the death of two American citizens is the most effective step to save its reputation. Obviously, it isn’t—and that may not be Trump’s goal. Following the original tweet behind the suggestion, the intent may just be to troll. The only ones pleased by the name change are Trump supporters who have a gripe against immigrants.

Those who are not in favor of the recent ICE crackdowns have already expressed their discontent online.

Political commentator Dean Withers wrote, “changing their name doesn’t erase the fact that these “nice agents” blasted an unarmed dude with 12 bullets in the back while he was on the ground on all fours.”

YouTuber JerryRigEverything commented, “Yeah so we all saw them shoot that woman in the face.”

Another social media post on X reads, “Do other governments think everyone is this stupid?”

Allegations of human rights violations

The media have been consistent in their criticism of ICE, and not for no reason.

ICE agents have been notably violent against civilians during protests. Two American citizens—Nicole Good and Alex Pretti—were shot by ICE agents in Minnesota. Although the story has enraged many Americans, the ICE agents involved have not yet been legally held accountable. Additionally, these are not the only crimes ICE agents have been linked to.

There are also allegations of sexual abuse happening in immigration detention centers. An anonymous, 19-year-old Honduran woman alleged that a detention officer began sexually abusing her in the detention facility.

According to a report by Sen. Jon Ossoff, there is “an undeniable pattern of human rights abuse in immigration detention.” He also detailed that there are “over 1,000 credible reports of human rights abuses” in the first year of the Trump administration alone. Ossoff’s investigation told stories of women separated from their newborns, migrants denied medical attention, and threats by ICE agents to separate families.

ICE is so ‘nice,’ to the point that 60 Minutes Editor in Chief Bari Weiss had to allegedly shelf a short documentary that exposed abuses in ICE-implemented CECOT prisons. Despite the delay in the documentary’s release, the footage still gained hundreds of thousands in views and trended online.

The Trump administration can call ICE whatever it likes—they can call it ‘NICE’ for the sake of trolling. But calling it ‘NICE’ doesn’t mean that the agency will live up to its new name.
