Disney Has a New Free Idea: A Bunch of Dogs Escaped Kidnappers and a Corgi Led the Way Home

Dogs working together to find their way back home? My heart! One of my favorite Scooby-Doo episodes as a child was “Decoy for a Dognapper,” and my VHS for Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco was always rewound and ready to go, so perhaps I’m a bit biased when it comes to news like this. But this is the kind of wholesome content I come online for, even if its origin is a bit more bleak and deals with actual dognapping.

On X, a story started going around about a group of seven dogs from a village in northeastern China “stolen from their owners have gone viral after escaping their captors and making their way home. The group is believed to have travelled around 17 km (1o mi) together led by a corgi across highways and fields.” Unfortunately, the darker truth behind this is more than just dognapping: These pups were headed to an illegal slaughterhouse.

Thankfully, the article included more heartwarming information, such as videos of the dogs walking in a clear formation with their fearless Corgi leader in front. The video from Instagram gives a little more content into the situation, saying, “It was later revealed that these seven dogs, who were ‘neighbors’ and regular playmates, had been suddenly snatched by dognappers. While being transported, they worked together to bite through their cage and leaped from the moving vehicle.”

“When a German Shepherd injured its leg, the others immediately surrounded it for protection,” the post continued. “During rest stops, the group formed a circle to shield one another. A Golden Retriever acted as a ‘sentry’ on the perimeter, scanning the surroundings while wagging its tail to reassure its companions. There were no commands or training involved – just pure instinct and a deep bond.”

Teamwork and empathy transcends species

AI can’t recreate something like this because AI doesn’t have the capacity to feel like I do after seeing these poor pups working together find their way back home like humans would. It’s also a reminder that animals have the capacity to think and problem solve just like humans do. These dog-friends all had a common goal and a place they loved that they needed to get back to. Just like in humans, one of these canines (in this case, the Corgi) stepped up and led the charge.

It’s always been said that lost animals can find their way home using scent and Earth’s magnetic fields, and it is possible that some of that is also at play here. However, the teamwork between these canine friends is undeniable, showcasing their instinctual pack-like nature and how that can evolve.

Some online are calling for a Disney adaptation of this tale, like Matthew A. Cherry, saying, “Need the animated movie version of this.”

Animals really are the best. Please, Disney. Adapt this.
