One thing people will immediately recognize from this trailer is that some years have passed since Part Two hit theaters. In fact, Dune’s focus on Paul’s journey has continued to turn on its head in Dune: Part Three. Chalamet’s protagonist is large and in charge right now. But, what does that mean for the future and the Fremen he led into full-scale war at the end of the last movie? It’s all stuff to ponder moving forward!

The Mary Sue was at the exclusive trailer premiere event hosted by Warner Bros. Director Denis Villeneuve thanked the assembled press for coming out to see the first glimpse of the heavily-anticipated conclusion to the Dune trilogy. Chalamet recorded a greeting for everybody in those IMAX seats. He had some nice things to say about Villeneuve, calling him a master of cinema. After the star’s message ended, we were treated to a quick back and forth with Denis explaining what brought him back for Part Three. It turns out, all of us losing our senses after the first movie prodded him along.

Of course, Villeneuve wasn’t about to do this alone. He welcomed up Robert Pattinson, Javier Bardem, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Zendaya to talk about their roles in the film. Chani has been through a lot, and she’s poised to go through more. Anya Taylor-Joy’s sibling revealed at the end of the last film has an undying fealty to Paul. Bardem’s hardened Fremen warrior was on the ground floor of the Atreides ascension. But, how has time changed him. And Pattinson plays Scytale, a name that will excite anyone who’s been down with these books for a while.

What Happens in the Dune Part Three Teaser?

The entire theme for Dune Part Three could be summarized by the phrase “heavy is the head that wears the crown.” Yes, Paul Atreides triumphed in part two. But, just like Villeneuve’s careful framing implied at the end of that film, there was a pyrrhic quality to it. He still has Chani, and Princess Irulan hovers in the periphery like a white, billowing ghost. However, the war is clearly taking its toll on the aging man. He’s feeling every year of watching his back from the machinations of different factions. People want a shot in the throne, and Paul was a fool for thinking that he could bring peace with just one well-fought duel.

Dune Part Three’s Most ardent characteristic might be the scale of warfare. There were a couple of large scale battles in Dune Part 2. But, things have ratcheted up here. The Fremen are still doing the bidding of House Atreides, And that means they’re in the direct line of fire when things go south.

Desperation is in the air for Dune: Part Three

Everyone is scheming, There’s talk of an air trying to be produced, and that’s before we even get into Robert Pattinson blonde haired menace entering the frame near the end. All these disparate situations are ready to boil over at a moment’s notice in Dune Part Three. Jason Momoa is back as Duncan Idaho in here. But, there’s something different about him… (The fan-favorite actor would ask Villeneuve why he got killed off in the first place, to the delight of the assembled crowd.)

Even though we’re doing a lot of the Dune Messiah novel, the filmmaker still finds ways to inject these classic science fiction moments with some real oomph. It’s enough to make you really wonder if we’re straight up just adapting the books. The wait is almost over, Dune Part Three crashes into theaters December 18.
