Christian Bale Has a Message for Whoever Takes on Patrick Bateman: “Whoever Wants to Give it a Shot, Give it a Pop”

It is no surprise that my favorite movie is American Psycho. I am someone who is very vocal about this fact. So the news that Luca Guadagnino’s attempt to adapt the controversial Bret Easton Ellis novel intrigued me. Even if I don’t think anyone can really touch Christian Bale’s performance.

As of writing this, there is no news on who is going to be Guadagnino’s Patrick Bateman. At this point, I really do think they should just adapt the musical into a movie and give me what I have been waiting for. But for now, we don’t know what this adaptation is going to have in store for us.

Luckily, our original Patrick Bateman, actor Christian Bale, has some words of encouragement for whoever takes on the fictional serial killer. At the New York premiere for The Bride!, Bale was asked about Guadagnino’s new take and he gave an honest response.

“Whoever wants to give it a shot, give it a pop. I loved making it with [director] Mary Harron so many years back, fantastic memories of it all. Bold choice of anyone to try to do a — I don’t know if they’re doing a remake or what, I don’t know anything else about it. But all the best to ’em, I like brave people.”

He does love Patrick Bateman

The character of Patrick Bateman is one that I have analyzed deeply. And it is clear that Bale still has a fondness for the work he did with Mary Harron on the 2000 film. In my own interview with Bale for The Bride!, he shared that his character, Frank, would probably love watching American Psycho the most out of his career. As someone who loves that movie most of all, I have to agree.

But the point here is that Bale’s work on American Psycho is something special. That’s not to say I don’t think it is an untouchable role or that we can never do it again. I do though think that there are other options for this story. Again, I will say that the musical is a fascinating adaptation of the novel and would be a great movie!

All this to say that Bale is right. It is going to be a lot to take on and a brave man is going to have to do it. So, whoever does attempt to take on Patrick Bateman, you have a lot to live up to.
