If You Are Avoiding ‘Scream 7,’ Here Is a Melissa Barrera Movie You Should Watch Instead!

The controversy surrounding Scream 7 has a lot of fans of Ghostface conflicted. They don’t want to support the film because they stand behind former star, Melissa Barrera, and her posts that Spyglass wrongfully called “antisemitic.” She was simply supporting Palestine.
So instead of watching the latest installment to the franchise, why not support one of Barrera’s most interesting films? From musicals like In the Heights to her new Peacock series, The Copenhagen Test, she has quite a range of roles to choose from. But her most exciting entry into that, outside of the incredibly fun horror movie Abigail, is her original musical film called Your Monster.
Laura Franco (Barrera) is an actress who is the muse of her boyfriend, Jacob (Edmund Donovan). But when her cancer diagnosis changes her outlook on life and she’s a little less enthusiastic, Jacob discovers that he is happily inspired elsewhere. Including dismissing a promise he made to Laura in the first place. But when she discovers the Monster (Tommy Dewey) who has always watched over her, things go off the rails.
It is very much a movie for the girlies who loved Prince Adam as the Beast more than a human when they watched Beauty and the Beast as children. It is me, I am those girlies. But I do think there is something so captivating about Barrera’s performance in the film!
Melissa Barrera singing? Who could ask for anything more!

One of my own favorite moments in the movie is when Laura sings a song called “My Stranger” in the final moments of the film. The song feels like something I would have 1000% performed in college and loved doing and you can tell how much Barrera loves this song as she’s performing it herself. It is the perfect footnote to Laura’s journey but does leave a lot of questions for fans of the film to discuss.
Is the Monster real or is it a figment of Laura’s imagination? Does the movie play out as it is written or is this just what Laura wishes? So much is up to us to decide and it makes for a brilliant watch. And one that will have you singing “My Stranger” as often as you can.
So, if you’re looking for a movie to watch that supports Melissa Barrera’s work and is just great, look no further than Your Monster, which is currently streaming on Netflix.
