Both David and Victoria Beckham have come under scrutiny because of the allegations leveled by their kid. At the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, the football icon referenced the social media posts and offered his perspective on the entire situation. Beckham began on CNBC’s Squawk Box, “I have always spoken about social media and the power of social media. For the good and for the bad.” So, the father views this as emblematic of social media lashing out. But, Beckham doesn’t name Brooklyn or the situation directly.

“The bad we’ve talked about with what kids can access these days, it can be dangerous. But what I have found personally, especially with my kids as well, use it for the right reasons,” he continued. “I’ve been able to use my platform and my following for UNICEF. And it has been the biggest tool to make people aware of what’s going on around the world for children.”

“And I have tried to do the same, I’ve tried to do the same with my children, to educate them,” Beckham admitted. “They make mistakes, but children are allowed to make mistakes. That is what I try to teach my kids. You sometimes have to let them make those mistakes as well.”

Beckham is being critiqued from all sides after that short allusion to the post. On one hand, he didn’t directly call out his kid on that stage. But, on the other hand, the framing of “children” is definitely pointed. It seems like the sports star thinks his son has some growing up to do. But, people online are going to see this however they want to ultimately. The British press, in particular, are having a field day with all of the speculation. In the age of social media we’re in, people just love a good scandal. Here’s some of what kickstarted all of this.

Brooklyn argued, “I do not want to reconcile with my family. I’m not being controlled, I’m standing up for myself for the first time in my life.”  From there, Beckham would categorize his parents as controlling and way too image focused. He asked for privacy with a message on a black background with a sans serif font, and friends, that is going to send up some red flags for people scrolling out there.

On social media, Beckham posted, “I have been silent for years and have made every attempt to keep these matters private. Unfortunately, my parents and their team have continued to go to the press, leaving me with no choice but to speak for myself and tell the truth about only some of the lies that have been printed.” This saga will continue, and we’ll have more whenever it develops.
