Here Comes ‘The Bride!’ and Her New Trailer Is Perfect for ‘Frankenstein’ Fans
Frankenstein’s Monster continues to be a special part of popular culture, as new adaptations reinterpret Mary Shelley’s iconic story for a whole new generation. As one of the most recent live-action incarnations, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, continues its awards push towards the Academy Awards, another highly-anticipated version of the story is waiting in the wings.
Next up is The Bride!, director Maggie Gyllenhaal’s star-studded and punk rock take on Shelley’s world. And just based on the latest footage from it, the film looks like it will be an absolute delight. On Thursday, Warner Bros. Pictures released a new trailer for The Bride!, ahead of its debut in theaters this March.
The footage shows off Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale’s takes on The Bride and Frankenstein’s Monster, as they embark on a Bonnie and Clyde-esque fight for their love… and survival. That combination of actors, the 1930s Chicago setting that Gyllenhaal chose for the movie, and the overall aesthetic choices have had me extremely excited since the movie first began production years ago, and it will be so much fun to see exactly how it alchemized onscreen.
According to the official synopsis for the film courtesy of Warner Bros., in The Bride!, “a lonely Frankenstein (Bale) travels to 1930s Chicago to ask groundbreaking scientist Dr. Euphronious (five-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening) to create a companion for him. The two revive a murdered young woman and The Bride (Buckley) is born. What ensues is beyond what either of them imagined: Murder! Possession! A wild and radical cultural movement! And outlaw lovers in a wild and combustible romance!”
I am the passenger
During a press conference for the release of the trailer, our Rachel Leishman was able to ask a question about The Bride!. She asked if there was a punk song that Gyllenhaal connected with the movie, given its punk look. Gyllenhaal responded with a fascinating choice.
“Yeah. I mean, again, as I said, punk is a lot of things. I think you could have a punk song from 1936. I
think you could have a punk song from right now, even if it didn’t go in the punk genre,” she said. “But what comes to mind actually is probably considered a punk song. I would say the Siouxsie And The Banshees cover of the Iggy Pop song, The Passenger, both because just vibe-wise, I think it fits right in with the movie. And also, I don’t know, she’s presented, The Bride, The Bride of Frankenstein, as the passenger when that is absolutely not what she is. She’s driving this story.”
The cast of The Bride! also includes Peter Sarsgaard, Jake Gyllenhaal, Penelope Cruz, Julianne Houghn and John Magaro. The Bride! is set to be released exclusively in theaters on March 6th.
