A Las Vegas woman returned home from Planet Fitness to receive a flirtatious text message from an employee. They allegedly accessed her personal information from her profile. When she reported the incident to Planet Fitness, she discovered that she was not the first woman the employee had done this to.

On Dec. 12, Juliana (@juli.ana_d) posted a TikTok describing the incident. Allegedly, a Planet Fitness employee accessed her personal information from her profile to send her a message. The video has received over 900,000 views as of Monday.

What happened with this Planet Fitness customer?

“Yesterday I went to Planet Fitness like normal,” says Juliana. “After I got home, I had gotten a text message from a phone number I did not have saved.”

She says the message asked her if she was at Planet Fitness that day, and she was confused who the message could have been from, as she had not previously contacted that number. ”Cause how did they know that I was just at Planet Fitness?” she asks.

She says the person claimed he got her number from a friend, but Juliana says his story didn’t add up.

“There are only two ways that this could have gone down,” she says. “Either he works at Planet Fitness or his homeboy does and […] pulled up my public information and gave him my phone number, both of which are horrible options.”

She describes asking him if he worked at Planet Fitness, and he revealed that he did. She was immediately concerned as the employee had access to personal information, including her address.

What did she do?

The day after the incident, she went to Planet Fitness to talk to the manager. “I’m gonna ask for a refund, at least of this month’s membership, because I did not pay to have my privacy violated,” she says. “And, yeah, so now I’m gonna have to start going to another gym.”

After speaking to the manager, she reveals that this was not the first time the employee had accessed personal contact information to contact a female member of the gym.

On Dec. 13, Juliana posted a follow-up video. In it, she describes her attempt to file a police report against the employee who accessed her private information. However, she is told that she can’t file a report. “I apparently can’t file a police report unless he threatens my life,” she says.

On Dec. 18, she posted an additional video where she shared more details of the aftermath. Juliana reveals that the manager of a separate Planet Fitness called her and shared that corporate had seen the original TikTok, and an investigation is underway.

“I had found out that he had been fired,” she shared. “He had been fired that Friday.”

Despite this, Juliana says she still decided to cancel her membership as she learned that another woman had reported similar behavior from this employee in the past. He continued to work there and had access to the personal information of the gym’s members.

What protections exist to prevent employees from stealing personal information from members?

When it comes to everyday businesses like gyms, protections against employee misuse of member information are a mix of corporate policy and consumer privacy law.

On the corporate side, companies like Planet Fitness have confidentiality and nondisclosure policies. These explicitly forbid employees from accessing or sharing member data for personal reasons. Plus, they require staff to handle personal information “only on a need-to-know basis” and not for personal gain.

Beyond internal rules, there are state and federal data privacy laws that give consumers rights over how businesses collect, use, and share their data. For example, in the U.S., many states, such as California, have comprehensive state laws that allow consumers to request access to, deletion of, or limits on the sharing of their personal information collected by businesses.
