Will There Be an Ozark Season 5?

And just like that…. Season Four: Part 2 of Ozark is over. That is a wrap. We won’t be discussing any of what did (or didn’t) occur in these final episodes, so don’t worry about spoilers here! Unfortunately, I am tasked with being the bearer of… well, not bad news, or even surprising news if you are a die-hard Ozark fan, but unfortunate news nonetheless.

That was our very last season of Ozark.

Will there be a season 5?

Which means that, as the creator and stars have been adamantly expressing for the past two years, there will not be a season 5. Netflix even recently released a sweet and sappy farewell video to the Byrde house.

Why not?

Showrunner Chris Mundy has always been adamant about wanting a definite end to the Byrde’s story because he wants the characters and the audience to have closure. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter after Part 1 released, he stated:

“I always want closure. I don’t want to feel messed with. I want to feel like, ‘OK that was the end.’ So, hopefully, people will feel closure by the end – whether they like it or not, I don’t know. In terms of tone, we’re going deeper into the family and their bonds. Is family the ultimate bond? Is friendship? Is marriage? At what point is it almost unhealthy to stay, even if you love somebody? We’re going to delve into that with Marty and Wendy. Hopefully, the back half will still be fun and exciting, but also really emotional for the Byrdes and Ruth.”

When star Jason Bateman was asked about the show coming to an end back in 2020, he mentioned on The Tonight Show that Mundy had actually told him how Ozark would end. According to Bateman, he was left knowing where everything was going to end along with the “big question” of whether or not the Byrdes were going to get away with it. He said:

“I do know where everything is going to end. The specifics leading up to it, I didn’t really grind him on. But I was interested in the big question he has the opportunity to answer: Are they going to get away with it, or are they going to pay a bill? What does he want to message to the audience about the consequences of what the Byrdes have done—or lack thereof?”

So there you have it! The final chapter may have closed for Ozark, so if you haven’t watched the final episodes yet, make sure to savor each and every aggressively blue tinted frame of them.
