When Is the ‘Locke & Key’ Season 3 Release Date?

Is there a magical key to hasten release dates?

Locke & Key is a supernatural thriller series that has delighted Netflix subscribers since 2020. The series is based on the IDW graphic novels of the same name, written by Joe Hill and illustrated by Gabriel Rodríguez. The series follows the Locke children—Tyler (Connor Jessup), Kenzie (Emilia Jones), and Bodie (Jackson Robert Scott)—who, reeling from their father’s passing, move into a home that is hiding magical keys. Furthermore, the house is their father, Rendell Locke’s, family home, allowing the Locke children to uncover their father’s secret history (in addition to the keys).

Locke & Key has run for two seasons so far and has received mostly positive reception. While a bit dragged down with poorly developed teenage romances and drama, the series is, ultimately, quite a touching portrayal of a family struggling through grief and trauma. In addition to this, Locke & Key is a dark, gripping thriller with demonic entities and action-filled fight scenes. The elements of thriller and horror, mixed with the emotional backstory of a family’s loss, add up well together.

However, season two of Locke & Key quite easily surpassed the first season. This latest season maintained its thrilling tone by keeping the villain, Dodge (Laysla De Oliveira), in disguise, and having her spend much of the season right alongside the oblivious Locke children. Additionally, it poignantly explored finding love again after loss, the trauma of recalling repressed memories, and finding and losing one’s first true love.

Locke & Key season 3 release date

With Locke & Key season two upping the ante, fans are curious as to when they can expect season three on Netflix. Locke & Key was renewed for a 3rd season back in December of 2020, shortly after season two wrapped filming. Unfortunately, Locke and Key‘s 3rd season will mark its very last season, as confirmed by executive producers, Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill. Jessup also disclosed that season three is the final season when he shared first-look images.

However, viewers can still be sure to receive a proper conclusion, as Cuse and Averill reveal that the series was always planned to run for three seasons. Meanwhile, the filming of season three already wrapped in 2021. But despite season three wrapping filming, its release date has not yet been confirmed.

Most likely, season three won’t release until late 2022 or early 2023. The first and second seasons of Locke & Key were released roughly within a year and 8 months of each other. However, considering these seasons were released between 2020 and 2021, the series likely experienced some covid-19 delays. Hence, there is potential that there may be less of a gap between season one and season two. Hopefully, this means we can expect Locke & Key season three before the end of 2022.
