Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Amy Vilela. Cori Bush. Paula Jean Swearengin. These are four of the 529 women who ran for Congress in 2018, and are the center of Rachel Lears’s Sundance audience award and festival favorite winning documentary Knock Down the House. It’s a testament to the women of all walks of life who have stood up and pushed back against the current administration, and the trailer is enough to bring tears to your eyes.
The summary of the film hits home: all of these women were motivated by both personal tragedy and national pain to step up for their communities. If you want a definition of tough, you can probably find all four of these women in the dictionary. As heartbreaking it is to see women who have suffered because of this country’s flaws, it is equally empowering to see them stepping up to change the country.
We know how the story ends for all four of these women, but even knowing who wins the primary and who doesn’t, it’s still hopeful to see people trying to affect change, even if some don’t succeed in the way we hope. As the trailer says “for one of us to make it through, a hundred of us have to try.”
So, let’s keep trying.
