It looks like Steve Trevor isn’t the only Wonder Woman character returning from the dead. Sources say that Robin Wright will be reprising her role as General Antiope in a flashback sequence in the hotly anticipated sequel Wonder Woman 1984. In an interview with Net-A-Porter, it is mentioned that Wright is filming a flashback scene with Connie Nielsen (Hippolyta) in Spain.
This is exciting news, as Robin Wright’s performance as the fearsome General Antiope was one of the highlights of Wonder Woman. Wright also shot scenes for Justice League with Connie Nielsen, which never made it into the final cut of the film (and don’t even get me started on the bogus costuming choices for the Amazons in that movie).
Wright’s performance resonated deeply with female viewers because Antiope was quite simply a character we had rarely seen before, if ever, on the big screen. To see a woman of Wright’s age (she was 50 at the time) display such raw strength and power in her fight scenes was thrilling and revolutionary. And while female action heroes are often imbued with a certain coldness, Wright’s Antiope was fueled by love. We see her train young Diana in secret, against the wishes of her sister and Queen, because she wants her niece to be a strong and capable Amazonian woman.
When Antiope takes a bullet for Diana, it is a devastating moment. Despite having maybe 20 minutes of screen time total, Antiope’s impact on Diana is felt throughout the rest of the film. Diana even wears Antiope’s diadem in tribute to her fallen aunt. While we’re obviously excited to see Wright’s return to the role, we’re still rooting for a spin-off vehicle about the origins of Themyscira and Antiope and Hippolyta’s rise to power.
In the meantime, it’s yet another reason to be excited for Patty Jenkins’ anxiously anticipated sequel.
