Captain America and Bucky Barnes in Infinity War

Fans Are Appreciating the New Infinity War Posters for Giving These Heroes the “Butt Shot”

Recommended Videos

Female characters are often depicted in sexy poses on promotions, twisted into impossible angles to best display heaving bosoms and other curves. That’s why fans are finding it refreshing that the new set of Infinity War posters do not pose the women as such—and instead flip a few of the menfolk around.

Marvel released 22 new individual character posters for Infinity War, and I’m in love with all of them. These are really well done, capturing the motley heroes in dynamic action and regal poses. Take, for example, my Kings:

These are just lovely, evocatively lit, and seem destined for dorm room walls (and mine). All of the primary players have received their own poster: Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Gamora, Hulk, Thor, Wong, War Machine, Captain America, Bucky Barnes, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Drax, Black Widow, Okoye, Nebula, Black Panther, Mantis, Falcon, Shuri, Groot & Rocket, Spider-Man, and Star-Lord.

(We assume the poster of Ant-Man riding on Hawkeye’s shoulder got lost in the mail.)

What’s especially heartening to see is that all of Infinity War‘s women are shown in decidedly non-sexualized poses. No, most of them look ready to take your damned head off, and that’s incredible. Our fighting ladies are looking fierce.

  • Okoye

Maybe a major studio doesn’t need this pat on the back, but it’s just stunning to me to see the emphasis here on the women’s strength and their weapons rather than on zipped-down cleavage.

As Susana Polo pointed out over at Polygon, fans on social media enjoyed the fact that both Captain America and his BFF Bucky Barnes were assuming the poses frequently used with women: turnabout is fair play.

People are still talking about this momentous development.

Yes, yes we can.

I could post tweets like this … ad infinitum.

My old io9 colleague James Whitbrook put together some excellent evidence that in Cap’s case at least, this is par for the course:

Still, it’s pretty rare to see such a prominent hero given a pose so rarely seen on men—and so often on women—in a huge promotional push.

This might even save the movie.

Putting on my tinfoil hat, I’d like to further point out that Cap and Bucky totally mirror each other here. Could that be a sign of where Bucky’s headed in the future?

Of course, their twinned poses also enabled another pose for skilled Photoshoppers out there: to celebrate the most epic romance in the MCU.
