The subject of the most recent Late Night With Seth Meyers’ “A Closer Look” was, unsurprisingly, the number of sexual misconduct allegations that came out this week in Congress. Jackie Speier revealed that there are two members currently serving who are perpetrators, Al Franken’s awful, terrible behavior came to light after Leeann Tweedan wrote about her experiences and shared a photograph of his harassment, and more women are coming forward with allegations against Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore.
It’s clear, as Meyers says, that harassment and assault are a “pervasive problem that affects every aspect of society”. The host goes through the many terrible defenses party members have offered, from Mo Brooks literally just running down stairs away from a reporter, Enzi refusing to talk about anything except taxes, Cotton’s “no comment” and Trump just walking away from questions. “If the future is so bright”, asks Meyers in response to the president’s comments on his trip to Asia, “Why do you look so bummed out walking away?”
“This is society-wide problem borne out of systemic misogyny and abuse of power,” says the host, “and both parties need to take it seriously, no matter who’s accused.”
