Director Rian Johnson was asked on Twitter about all the new jewelry in Star Wars Episode VIII – The Last Jedi, and he posted the below response. “In rehearsals,” he tweeted, “Carrie grabbed my arm and told me with great urgency that we needed ‘space jewelry.’ I thought that was a fabulous idea. So.”

Like Amy Ratcliffe over at Nerdist, I don’t know if this story is a slight exaggeration, but “space jewelry” does sound like the most Carrie Fisher phrase ever. Leia herself famously wore the chalcedony waves, a necklace passed down to the women of of House Organa, in Star Wars Episode IV – A New Hope, and it’s also appeared in the Star Wars: Princess Leia comic book.
One of the most high-profile pieces of jewelry in The Last Jedi is Rose Tico’s crescent moon necklace. Kelly Marie Tran, who plays Rose, has said that her character is “a very practical person, she’s very pragmatic…She knows exactly, probably, how many things can go wrong in a situation.” And yet, Rose has been spotted wearing a not-so-practical necklace which, unsurprisingly, has a special character history behind it.

“That is definitely something that is significant to Rose’s backstory,” Tran told Entertainment Weekly. “It is an object that she kind of has throughout the film, and it is representative of more than the object itself to her. So, yeah, that’s all I can say. It has significance that is, to me, something that means more than just what the object itself is.”
A huge part of Star Wars‘ appeal is its world-building, so I love the addition of some “space jewelry” to flesh out its cultures and aesthetics. Plus, in a world where people still try to claim that Star Wars is a “boy thing,” I am 200% on board with flooding this new trilogy with jewelry.
