Neil deGrasse Tyson: famed astrophysicist, Hayden Planetarium director, and movie reviewer. Tyson loves to take to Twitter to point out the scientific facts and—more often than not—the inaccuracies in our favorite movies about as much as everyone else loves to hate on him for it. It’s all in good fun, though, and he’s back at it again in this video about a few of our 2017 blockbusters.
In addition to reportedly being better than Prometheus, the new Alien: Covenant appears to have at least some grounding in scientific reality for the basis of its human colonizers, although it’s still a weird choice not to scope the place out thoroughly beforehand. Tyson also makes the point with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 that—as we’ve gone over ad infinitum in conversations about Star Wars and sound in space—movies sometimes bend scientific fact in order to provide better entertainment, and as much as it may grate on the scientifically minded, we should all probably just get over it and enjoy the show.
And then there’s Baywatch. And Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson carrying two refrigerators. And as easy as Tyson points out it probably is for him, we cannot fault Baywatch for giving movie audiences exactly what they want. What? Refrigerators are not that heavy on their own? Shut up, science/basic logic. We’re busy marveling at The Rock, and we can find no fault with that.
