Alan Tudyk Shows Off the Cockney Accent He Wanted K-2SO to Have in Rogue One

Even if you haven’t seen Rogue One yet, you’ve probably heard a thing or two about Alan Tudyk’s portrayal of K-2SO, a sarcastic robot who’s technically a reprogrammed Imperial droid. Turns out, the character’s signature accent went through a couple of iterations before the movie’s creative team settled on the final version. In an interview on Conan, Tudyk acted out some of the examples, thereby showing off his own excellent accent-mimicking abilities.

Okay, I don’t actually know if these accents are excellent because I’m not from the UK, so they’re probably terrible, but… listen. Alan Tudyk calling Darth Vader a “pillock” in a thick Cockney accent is something that I believe we all can enjoy, even if the accent isn’t perfect.

As Tudyk explains in the interview, usually the bad guy higher-ups in the Empire have British accents (although not always), so it made some sense that even a reprogrammed Imperial droid would still retain that accent. This also isn’t the first time that a Star Wars movie’s stars have had to figure out what type of accent to use for each character. For example, Daisy Ridley got to keep her accent in The Force Awakens, but John Boyega’s natural British accent got axed. Not that he didn’t try it!

Meanwhile, Alan Tudyk also showed off his ability to do at least one other accent… or, an approximation of one. He does a very brief impression of his co-star Diego Luna in this clip, which also features a lot of physical comedy in which Alan Tudyk acts out what it was like for him to go to the bathroom while wearing his robot stilts:
