New Fifty Shades Darker Trailer Asks “Can Love Survive?” (No.)

Recommended Videos

“I’m not very good at this, I never wanted to try again,” grimaces Christian Grey in the new Fifty Shades Darker trailer. I mean, we’re not going to disagree.

The synopsis on IMDB tells you “Christian wrestles with his inner demons, Anastasia must confront the anger and envy of the women who came before her,” but that sounds a bit too sanitized and, y’know, consensual. Spoilers for Fifty Shades Darker, I guess. This book in the trilogy is about Grey trying to will back Ana after their break-up with gestures like buying the publishing company she gets a job at (before they get back together, which makes the creepy even creepier), getting mad and yelling at her after her boss attempts to assault her, and generally failing to understand or practice consensual sex and BSDM.

The trailer plays with a cover of “Crazy in Love,” and Fifty Shades continues to get a better soundtrack and team than it deserves. Kim Bassinger plays the woman who sexually abused Christian as a youth (Sidenote: Can outlets stop calling her character his “former lover”? It’s gross.), and has some lines how Ana’s not the first women who’s tried to “save” Christian. Other plots include Christian and his helicopter and one of his former subs stalking Ana like the creature from It Follows.

Fifty Shade of Grey director Sam Taylor-Johnson left the franchise, with James Foley taking up the role for Darker and the third film, Fifty Shades Freed. The movie comes out February 10th just in time for Valentine’s Day, but so is The LEGO Batman Movie and John Wick: Chapter 2 and paint will also be drying somewhere so I think we’re good on romantic plans. What did you think of the trailer?
