Save Your Galleons: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Apparating Stateside in 2018

Recommended Videos

If you, like more than a few of us here, didn’t exactly have the funds to fly across the world to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on stage in London, then perk up and pay attention: this one’s for you. Apparently the show will be coming stateside, sporting a “distinctive new aesthetic” different from the London version of the play.

The Lyric theater on Broadway will also be undergoing renovations in preparation for the show, actually reducing the number of seats they support by 400, going from 1,900 to 1,500 seats. Apparently the smaller auditorium is needed to support some of the show’s special effects (hmm). The plan, according to show producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender, is to provide the show “with a bespoke home that will be intimate enough for a drama, yet big enough for us to deliver on our commitment to provide audiences with access to low priced tickets throughout the auditorium.” Seems reasonable; 1,500 seats is still a lot of room for a lot of butts. That being said, there will more than likely be a premium for the seats, at least for the first few months.

The show opened to some solid reviews (including our own), so you can expect to have to put a little effort into scoring some tickets for the stateside premiere. Monetarily speaking, the show was a smashing success, raking in loads of money at the box office over its run. This bodes well for the Lyric, which has seen its share of box office bummers (cough cough Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark cough cough)

So since the Lyric’s going to have to renovate for the show, we’ll be in for a bit of a wait. Cursed Child is scheduled to apparate sometime in 2018.
