Listen to Westworld’s Composer Play the Show’s Captivating Title Theme on Piano

Recommended Videos

Despite being the person who usually skips opening sequences, the Westworld opening is one I typically watch in whole simply because it’s so enthralling. Ramin Djawadi, the composer of the Westworld and Game of Thrones theme, went on Facebook Live before the latest episode to greet fans and play the full title theme on the piano. He shows up a little past the 2-minute mark in the video above.

In addition to treating fans with a musical treat, Djawadi briefly talks about the significance of music in the show, stating, “The piano has been a big part of the score and it’s also been a great tool to implement these contemporary songs that we have planted in the saloon.” The piano covers of Radiohead, The Cure, and other rock songs have become a motif in Westworld and fans have been eager to hear and name what the newest cover is in each new episode. Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black” played in the most recent episode, and even without hearing “I died a hundred times” it felt like an perfect accompaniment to Maeve’s plotline. Of course, these songs also serve a second purpose of breaking the viewer’s immersion—which is both clever and frustrating at times. You can read more about the covers and how Djawadi uses them in this Pitchfork article.

Their Facebook page also shared a selection of songs in a Spotify playlist which includes the main theme, in addition to the show’s take on “Black Hole Sun,” “Paint It, Black,” “No Surprises,” and “A Forest.” You can check that out here.
