We’re pretty fond of Kubo and the Two Strings despite its whitewashing because it’s a visually stunning film. Following in the footsteps of Coraline and ParaNorm, the film uses stop animation to create these elaborate sequences backed by an interesting tale.
That couldn’t be more apparent than in this clip from our friends as Universal Pictures, which features Kubo regaling a crowd with the story of an ancient warrior. He makes mixes things up with some background music and neat paper mache tricks. Perhaps if every novel came with its own animated paper mache figures, I’d be more interested in reading James Joyce.
The story centers on a young boy with magical abilities who embarks on a journey to uncover his family’s legacy. After accidentally summoning an evil spirit, he sets out to solve the mystery of his fallen samurai father while uncovering his own magical gifts.The film features the voices of Charlize Theron, Matthew McConaughey, George Takei, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Ralph Fiennes, Brenda Vaccaro and Rooney Mara.
Oh, and it’s out on DVD and Blu-ray now.
