Bounce TV’s Blaxploitation Movie Subscription Service, Brown Sugar, Is ‘Like Netflix, Only Blacker’

In the mood for some Foxy Brown but don’t know where to find it? Jonesing for a little Black Caesar? Do you not have a clue about any of this? Well, by golly, this post is for you! Bounce TV has launched a brand new subscription service called Brown Sugar, featuring only blaxsploitation films. It’s being touted as “a black explosion of hot chicks, cool cats and cult classics,” according to Variety. Think of it as “like Netflix, only blacker.”

Right now, the service has 111 movies in its catalogue including The Mack, Shaft, Super Fly, Dolemite, Cotton Comes to Harlem, Uptown Saturday Night, Cooley High, Five on the Black Hand Side, Cleopatra Jones, Mandingo, Willie Dynamite, Which Way is Up?, Car Wash and The Original Gangstas. You can sign up for it in Apple iTunes, the Google Play Store or on its website. Like Netflix, a one-month free trial is available. After that, it costs $3.99 per month.

In order to get people interested, they’ve already enlisted the likes of Pam Grier and Fred “The Hammer” Williamson (who both appeared in quite a few of these films) as spokespersons, as well as rapper Rick Ross for some reason. “These movies are entertaining and fun, but they were also empowering to the black community as they depicted African-Americans as strong leading characters and heroes for the first time,” Grier said.

Will you be subscribing?
