Writer J. R. R. Tolkien is the next historical figure to have his life story brought to the big screen in an upcoming film titled Middle Earth.
British director James Strong will direct a biopic about Tolkien’s early life, his relationship to Edith Bratt, and his time in the First World War—experiences that inspired The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Strong is a BAFTA-nominated director whose resume includes Broadchurch, Downton Abbey, Doctor Who, and 11.22.63. The script is by Angus Fletcher, who spent six years doing archival research and personal interviews with the writer, so we can probably expect an intimate look at the famous author.
Producing is Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne through the banner Unique Features, who also greenlit The Lord of the Rings Trilogy when they were at New Line. There’s clearly a lot of love for Tolkien in the team, so it’s worth keeping an eye on Middle Earth. Notably, there’s no news yet on who will be playing the iconic author.
