All About Arrow: Season 5, Episode 4, “Penance”

Recommended Videos

Arrow season five continued its strong start with another great ep last night. Did you watch? I hope you did, because this is the spoiler-laden open thread, so go get caught up before you partake!

As predicted in last week’s Arrow episode thread, this week’s episode is all about a prison break. Diggle’s in the doghouse, and our heroes have to get him out of there. Mostly so that he can help them with the whole superheroing thing. He’s no good to anybody in prison! It’s too bad that now Diggle has to be a fugitive, though …

This season’s Big Bad, Tobias Church, wreaks some havoc upon the city’s Anti-Crime Unit, and Team Arrow (minus Oliver, who is busy breaking Diggle out) has to stop him. Speaking of Team Arrow, Rory has a lot of mixed feelings about being a part of the group and is still struggling to move on from learning about Felicity’s decision with regard to Havenrock. The two exchange some pep talks in this episode; Felicity wants Rory on the team, and so does Oliver, in spite of his misgivings. Eventually, Rory agrees, telling Felicity: “We can’t let guilt swallow us up.”

The “Penance” title reflects the episode’s emphasis on the past and atoning for prior wrongs, and that theme worked well in response to the previous episode’s themes on trust. What do you all think so far? Do you like the new Team Arrow recruits and the overall themes of the season?
