Disney’s Haunted Mansion is a gosh darned institution. So it figures, then, that there’s a particularly dedicated fandom standing right behind it. It also figures that this same fandom would be working to try to get a documentary made about their much-beloved attraction. Enter documentarian James H. Carter II, who just launched a GoFundMe asking for $4,000 to help finish the production of Foolish Mortals, a documentary based on the Haunted Mansion.
According to the GoFundMe page, the documentary’s already mostly put together. All they have left to do is wrap up a few more interviews, which basically means they’ve got some pretty hefty travel in their future.
Thanks to Disneyland rules, none of the documentary will have any in-park footage—folks are just not allowed to film there, generally speaking. The only exception to that particular rule is the notorious Escape From Tomorrow, which was surreptitiously shot guerilla-style right under park management’s noses.
From the sound of it, and looking at Foolish Mortals‘ description, it seems like this documentary is going to focus on both the attraction and the fandom surrounding it. Similar documentaries that immediately come to mind are Back in Time, which looks at Back to the Future, and Ghostheads, which (predictably) centers on Ghostbusters. Both of those documentaries aren’t just about the movies themselves, but rather the community of dedicated, die hard fans that have popped up around each of them.
As a bonus, the minds behind Foolish Mortals are also hoping to complete work on a VR-based Haunted Mansion so folks can tour the attraction any time they’d like. So, if you’re a fan of the Haunted Mansion (or even Disney parks in general), you should check out the fundraising page and maybe consider throwing in a few bucks to see this project get made.
