You have to forgive us for gushing so much about Stranger Things. The latest car in our hype train is this spot-on rendition of what an 8-bit Stranger Things video game might look like. This isn’t the first video game rendition of Stranger Things, to be sure. In fact, because the show itself is practically leaking ’80s references, 8- and 16-bit video game versions seemed to be one of the first places our imaginations ran off to shortly after it premiered. That isn’t a complaint–it’s just interesting, is all.
In this particular example, you can see the fearless foursome facing down the Demogorgon, whose shadow is the only thing visible in the GIF. It’s a bit disorienting—usually RPG fight screens are displayed from the point of view of the protagonists, but here, we’re looking at them from the Demogorgon’s view. Hmm. Symbolism! We’re all the real Demogorgons. Just kidding. Not really. (Maybe. Have you checked to see if you’re in the Upside Down lately? Hmm.)
What’s especially neat about this GIF are all the tiny little details incorporated by its artist, Midio. Everyone’s got their speciality, stat-wise: Eleven’s special blows everyone out of the water, Lucas’ PP (usually representing actions) is pretty darn high, Dustin seems to be the group’s tank with his massive HP, and Mike seems to be fairly well rounded, which is, I guess, appropriate for a leader. Also check out how Midio worked in Dustin’s adorable baby teeth—a fine detail that definitely serves the overall image. Fantastic.
Oh, and in case anyone’s wondering: yes, were I in any of these kids’ shoes, I’d probably select “SCREAM” as an action, too. I’m not going to lie about that.
