The reboot of cult favorite The Tick has released some images featuring some of its new cast in their new costumes, and reactions have been … mixed. First of all, I think some fans are still overcoming disappointment about the fact that Patrick Warburton won’t be returning in the title role, although he is a part of the production team. Instead, that’s Peter Serafinowicz wearing the goofy blue outfit. And gosh, is it ever goofy!
Are these costumes really any weirder than the original costumes, though? I mean, they do look odd, but … The Tick is odd, and always has been odd. Even though this iteration promises to be “darker and more grounded,” it’s The Tick we’re talking about here. I expect it to look surreal. And it definitely does, here.
As for what we might expect from the show, which is showing up on Amazon streaming next month, here’s the official synopsis:
In a world where superheroes have been real for decades, an underdog accountant with zero powers comes to realize his city is owned by a global super villain long-thought dead. As he struggles to uncover this conspiracy, he falls in league with a strange blue superhero. The Tick stars Peter Serafinowicz (Guardians of the Galaxy), Griffin Newman (Vinyl), Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen), Valorie Curry (House of Lies), Yara Martinez (Jane the Virgin) and Brendan Hines (Scorpion). The Tick is executive produced by Ben Edlund (Supernatural), Barry Josephson (Bones) and Barry Sonnenfeld (A Series of Unfortunate Events), directed by Wally Pfister (The Dark Knight), and written by Edlund. The Tick is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television.
What d’you think? Sound like The Tick you know and love? The “conspiracy” bit does make the show sound darker than the original, as we’ve been warned. And I can’t help but notice that Warburton’s name isn’t listed in the production credits, although his IMDB page says he’s involved, but I guess he’s not high enough on the chain to earn a slot in the synopsis. Anyway, hopefully this new version will retain some of the bizarre charm of the original series!
