This Spice Girls’ “Wannabe” Remake Shows Girls Really, Really Want Equality

Recommended Videos

The amount of girl power in this video that brings together singers and dancers from India, Nigeria, South Africa, the UK, USA, and Canada is off the charts. Set to Spice Girls’ iconic “Wannabe,” this video follows some amazing performances by girls next to signs that demand an end to violence against girls, an end to child marriage, access to education, and equal pay for equal work.

You’ll catch Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez, Nigerian artist Seyi Shay, Moneoa, rapper Gigi Lamayne, London R&B trio M.O., dancer Larsen Thompson, and Taylor Hatala in the video, which was directed my MJ Delaney. Delaney says:

This is about modern day girl power.

The Spice Girls were about a group of different women joining together and being stronger through that bond. These differences are what we want to celebrate in this film, while showing there are some universal things that all girls, everywhere, really, really want.

This year is the 20th anniversary of “Wannabe,” and the video ends with the words, “Girl power has come a long way, let’s take it further.” #WhatIReallyReallyWant was created by Project Everyone as part of the UN’s Global Goals campaign. They encourage people to participate by sharing a photo of yourself holding up what you “really, really want for girls and women” with the hashtag #WhatIReallyReallyWant.

Project Everyone was founded by Love Actually director Richard Curtis and backed by Freida Pinto and Chiwetel Ejiofor. “This year we’re keeping up the noise and going deeper,” says Curtis, “trying to show how the [global] goals contain the answers to the world’s problems.”

Both Victoria Beckham and Melanie Chisholm have tweeted their support. What do you really, really want?
