When it comes to the newest Ghostbusters film, the director of the original two movies is adding his voice to the plus column.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ivan Reitman (who directed both Ghostbusters and the sequel, and serves as a producer on the new reboot film) said he sympathizes with those who may be resistant to the film because of their strong attachment to the originals, and understands that not all of the negative voices are necessarily a result of sexism:
It surprised me a little bit, but then I realized many of the people who are writing were about eight or nine years old when the 1984 Ghostbusters movie came out. It was kind of a seminal moment in their lives. Look, it’s a nice compliment to me, that the film has sort of held up for them as an important cinematic experience in their lives.
Reitman went on to say, however, that he’s “confident” in the upcoming screening of the reboot film and believes in the chemistry of the new cast, drawing comparisons between them and the cast of the 1984 Ghostbusters: “The most important thing is the four women are spectacular together. They’re exactly at this point in their lives that my Ghostbusters were as well, in terms of their accomplishments.” Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones are current members of the Saturday Night Live cast, while Kristen Wiig departed the show in 2012 and Melissa McCarthy has hosted several successful episodes. When you examine that against the original 1984 cast, which also consisted of original SNL cast members, Reitman’s comparisons make a whole lot of sense.
And as for the trailer, which earned the title of the most disliked movie trailer in the history of YouTube? “There was no one-and-a-half-minute trailer that was going to stand up to that emotionality of what that experience was like. It goes beyond how good or bad a movie is. It goes to kind of a life experience.” At this point, it seems like Reitman is taking the stance of everyone else behind the reboot: just go watch it for yourself, if you want to, but it’s hardly going to take away the “life experience” that the original movies created for so many fans.
