4 Privet Drive, which is typically closed to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London will open doors May 27th to June 6th for Harry Potter fans in honor of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone‘s 15 year anniversary. Also included in their celebration throughout the year will be special features on the first movie and authentic set visits including Hagrid’s Hut, the boy’s dormitory, and the Gryffindor common room.
To make it a bit more exciting than walking into a muggle house and maybe getting a sit in Harry’s miserable cupboard under the stairs, the graphic design team MinaLima has created hundred of Hogwarts acceptance letters to be suspended in the air which a look at how the film itself created the effects with ~10,000 letters (bonus points if you’re there on a Sunday). Also on display will be the Dursley outfits, and the decorators said they had “fun sourcing the ugliest sofas, worst tiles and most vulgar curtains possible.” Other things not announced but I picture when I think of Privet Drive: a mysterious tabby cat that stares, peculiar sounds coming from above from a special elf, and maybe a balloon in the likeness of Aunt Marge in the backyard. Just some friendly suggestions, Warner Bros!
While Privet Drive might not be the first destination that comes to mind when you think about Harry Potter, it would be an interesting stop for fans to see how the design of their plain, suburban home and the setting of Harry’s unhappy childhood is constructed in contrast to the magical bustling world he discovers in Diagon Alley and Hogwarts. If you’re lucky enough to be there this year, you can check out the events and buy tickets here. If you’re like me and gutted you can’t go, hopefully their website will have images or an interactive Google Map that we can explore from our own unmagical cupboards.
